Sony has trotted out a new set of smart glasses to take on Google Glass called the SmartEyeglasses Developer Edition SED-E1. Pre-orders for the glasses have kicked off today in the UK and Germany where they will first launch. The SED-E1 glasses are transparent lens eyewear that connects to compatible smartphones and overlays various information on the wearer’s field of view.

Along with the launch of the SED-E1 glasses Sony is also lancing the SmartEyeglass SDK for developers to use in creating apps to work with the glasses. Sony says that its glasses use holographic waveguide technology that allows the 3mm thick augmented reality lenses to have high brightness and 85% transparency.

The glasses use no half mirrors that obstruct the wearer’s vision. The display is monochrome and has a luminance of 1000 cd/m2. The binocular display can show text and information in a range of lighting conditions. The glasses weigh 77g and have a 3MP CMOS image sensor inside along with an accelerometer, gyro, electronic compass, and a brightness sensor.

The glasses have a separate controller that houses the battery, speaker, microphone, NFC, and touch sensor for controls. At launch, Sony says that a selection of apps will be available for the glasses from Google Play. The apps will be available from the SmartEyeglass host app on the smartphone. The developer edition glasses will cost 670 euro or about $840 USD.
