3D Robotics is one of – if not the – largest drone manufacturers in the US, and it has made a move today that will possibly improve its already awesome Tower flight control app – that is, make it open source. There are already a few ways that you can control your drones through Tower – like the Tower Wear app for wearables for instance – but this move just offers developers new ways to add features into the app without having to starting from scratch.
Tower is basically Droidplanner, version 3.0. Droidplanner was 3DR’s main tool for its drones – and the new Tower app just builds on what Droidplanner was before, adding some new features. But going open source is the biggest feature, opening up the control app to newer ideas and possibly better versions of the Tower app.
To show what developers could do, 3DR themselves built Tower Wear, an app you can install on an Android Wear-powered smartwatch. Tower Wear allows you to control some aspects of your drone’s flight right from the convenience of your wrist.
To give developers the freedom to tweak Tower to hopefully better and more innovative versions, 3DR has also launched 3DR Services, an aggregation of the third party tools that can be used by developers. All of these new apps are now live at the Google Play Store. Check out the download links below.
