Yeah, device naming conventions can be a total bummer at times – as there are only a few numbers that are sound to use from a marketing perspective. But there are times when the sanity of a device naming choice just eludes us. Might this be one of those times? Someone has spotted the upgrade version of the budget-friendly Sony Xperia E1 in a Spanish retail store, and it is confusingly called (wait for it) the Sony Xperia E1 II.
To balance things out, we are not even sure if this leak is legit – just because a retail store posted information doesn’t automatically mean it’s true. Retail websites have been known to make mistakes you know. But if it is legit, we can’t see the logic behind it, and why they haven’t opted to call it the Sony Xperia E2 – which they have consistently done for the other devices in the Xperia line.
There is a bit of confusion in the other information, images (they have used an image of the old Xperia E1) and specs that the website has published, causing our doubts to grow if this is indeed legit. But for what it is worth, the bulk of the specs have been upgraded. The 4-inch screen size is retained, but the 960×540 resolution is a jump from the 800×480. The dual-core 1.2GHz processor has been upgraded to a quad-core 1.3GHz proc (or 1.4GHz one depending on which information on the page you look at). There is also 5MP/2MP camera combo, 1GB RAM and 8GB internal storage – all upgrades from the earlier model.
This Xperia E1 II will purportedly run on Android 4.4 KitKat. As we have said, there are doubts as to the veracity of the information here. But we will probably know in a month’s time when the MWC 2015 rolls in and we get the official announcement from Sony. Meanwhile, check the source for yourself – that can be found at the via link below.
