The news that NVIDIA will be coming up with an upgraded version of its highly successful and acclaimed SHIELD Tablet comes as no surprise, especially as we were treated last week to an unveiling of the octa-core monster that is the Tegra X1 at the CES 2015 in Las Vegas. The new SHIELD Tablet in the works is likely to feature the Tegra X1 as its processor.
There was a fear that NIVIDIA’s SHIELD Tablet would be a one-off, because it was just that good. The updates for Android came promptly, and it offered close to stock Android experience – no bloatware. The hardware was built around the Tegra K1 chip, still one of the fastest and most efficient processors out there even today. So what’s not to like? Well, maybe before this piece of news, there was a fear that NVIDIA would not come up with an upgraded version.
Well, the news is that NVIDIA is supposedly working on a successor to the powerful gaming tablet, and it would be out in a few months – so there’s some good news for us. No specs available yet, but from what we know of the Tegra X1, it should be yummy enough for us. The Tegra X1 is built on a 20nm chip that has a 256-core Maxwell GPU. The processor side boasts of an octa-core setup with big.LITTLE architecture – four ARM Cortex-A57 cores paired with four ARM Cortex-A53 cores. So robust, eh?
We will have to wait patiently, but we assure you that news of the specs of this new tablet should start trickling in soon. What features would you like to see in this new tablet? Sound off in our comments section.

Put the chip in the Shield Portable Form factor
VITAL to me that it’s unlocked out of the box. After that it’s all icing. I’ve only had my Shield Tablet for 3 weeks now and I am crazy loving it. Stream pc games to my tv and I dont need to use my chromecast. Best tablet on the market. The Nvidia Grid games being free doesn’t hurt at all either.
