Solutions for our battery problems with our smartphones, tablets, and other gadgets continue to pour in as we struggle with always being mobile and fully charged. But charging battery extenders and power banks can also become a challenge, especially if they run out of juice while you’re still on the go. A new Kickstarter project says it can liberate you from the power grid because this energy supply relies on fuel cell technology.

Kraftwerk calls itself your “very own portable power plant” and the best part is you don’t have to lug something heavy around because it is small but highly efficient. Instead of constantly plugging it in a power outlet to give it the ability to charge your mobile gadgets, all you need to do is fill it up just as you would a car. You can use standard camping gas or lighter gas, which you can probably get at convenience stores. A fully fueled kraftwerk can last up to weeks and can give your device multiple charges.

You can connect it to your smartphone, tablet, or even your GoPro, using the standard USB connector. It can also withstand all weather conditions, which makes it ideal for camping, mountain trekking, and other outdoor activities where you won’t be able to plug in. It can also be considered more environmentally friendly than the other power banks since it uses optimum energy efficiency.

The Kickstarter project has more than reached its goal of raising $500,000 (it’s currently at almost $890,000) with 32 days to go before it officially closes. They are targetting the end of this year to be able to deliver this device to the early bird backers (all the slots are gone). But if you pledge $99 or more now, you’ll be able to receive your kraftwerk by February next year. That’s a long wait ahead of you, but it will probably be worth the wait.

  1. Unfortunately they will not give an estimate of how much energy a full tank of fuel will give (I realize it’s refillable). If its only 5000 mAh – it not very interesting. If it can deliver 50,000 mAh of energy or more – it’s very useful
