Good news for AT&T subscribers who make frequent calls to Mexico – where the mobile carrier had previously charged 1 cent a minute to wireless and landline numbers in the country – it is now offering unlimited calling for just USD$5.00 a month as part of its World Connect Value plan.

This announcement comes just days after AT&T, second-largest mobile carrier in the US, closed a deal seeing it acquire Mexican carrier Iusacell, which has an impressive 70 percent coverage of Mexico’s 120-million population. It looks like the US carrier intends to push itself into the Mexican market and fully leverage its acquisition.

The unlimited calling plan is certainly a boon to US customers who make regular calls to friends and family in Mexico. “Mexico is the most frequently dialed country among our wireless customers,” attests David Christopher, chief marketing officer of AT&T Mobility. For the people who make these voice calls, the plan potentially saves them a significant amount of monthly expense.

This is a logical move for the US carrier, giving their customers a welcome break. The World Connect Value plan also offers low-rate calling from the US to other countries, like the 1 cent per minute charge for calls to Canada.
