On the heels of T-Mobile’s rollover data plan, another US carrier has responded and is offering their own version for their subscribers. AT&T has announced that they are launching later this month a rollover plan for their shared data subscribers, giving the option and opportunity for members of the shared plan to take on the unused data from their other members from the previous month.
Those who are on the carrier’s Mobile Share Value Plan, whether they are for business or for family purposes, will qualify for the roll-over data, without incurring any additional charges. Whatever data is left over from this month will carry on in to the next and can be used by any member of the shared plan. However, it is a bit more complicated since you have to use your data plan first before you get the rollover from the previous month. So for example, if you’re on a 10GB plan and you used just 9 this month, 1GB will rollover to next month. But if you only used 8GB next month, that 1GB from the previous month will be lost, and you’ll just get 2GB rollover for the next month.
On its own, AT&T’s rollover scheme seems pretty okay, but compared to what T-Mobile is giving to subscribers, it kind of falls short. For T-Mobile, which does not have a shareable data plan, the rollover data is for individual plans. And your entire data allocation is in escrow for 12 months, as compared to AT&T’s monthly rollover. So if you’re already with T-Mobile, it may not be worth transferring over to the other carrier just for their rollover offer.
AT&T will start the rollover feature by January 25 and will automatically apply for the Mobile Share Value Plan holders. You will be able to trace the rollover data through the carrier’s app or website.
