As promised to arrive in time for holiday cheer, Motorola has made available two new variants of the highly popular circular Moto 360 smartwatch. Now coming not just in gold and silver palettes but also in a slightly slimmer physique, expanding the appeal and target audience of this otherwise rather geeky timepiece. Naturally, it will come with a higher price to pay.

Early this month, Motorola announced the pending arrival of the metallic variants of the Moto 360. Metal is a rather tricky material to use in a smartwatch, says Motorola, since it could potentially affect the radio antennas found along the edges of the device. That is why, even though the Moto 360 conformed to the standard 22 mm strap size (23 mm for the metal ones), Motorola discouraged using just any metal strap in its place. That said, it also becomes a business opportunity for Motorola to sell certified metal straps.

The gold and silver variants of the Moto 360 sport both straps and body of the same color. The new options add a bit of class to the smartwatch that already looks classier than its existing kin. But in addition to that, Motorola has also slimmed down the strap a bit, now at 18 mm. This size could appeal to women as well as men who prefer wearing less obnoxious timepieces. Although the watch face itself is the same size, the slimmer straps do create a sort of illusion that the watch is smaller overall. Plus, it is still possible to mix and match parts, with a gold body and a brown leather strap looking like an auspicious pair.

The Gold Moto 360 sells for $329, considerably higher than the $249 of a regular leather version but only a bit so compared to the $299 of the metal versions. The Silver one, on the other hand, maintains the $299 tag of its other metallic brethren. At the moment, it is still unknown if Motorola will be selling 18 mm slim straps separately like it does for other types of straps.
