We’ve all been there (well, at least those who have Facebook accounts). You complain about how Facebook’s privacy settings are sorely lacking and how it’s so hard to post such and such with everybody seeing it and how (insert other complaints here), etc etc, only for someone to point out to you that actually, you can control who sees your posts and all you have to do is (insert steps here), etc etc. It’s just that a lot of people are too lazy to read the how to’s or there’s just so much fine print to go through.
Facebook has now launched Privacy Basics to let their users now in a more engaging manner (and with animated characters to boot) what are the different things you can control on your feed, whether it’s setting up who can see or not see your posts or how you can control what you see on your timeline (which isn’t really very controllable to be honest). They haven’t really changed their privacy settings, but now you’ll be able to understand it better through infographics, simpler text, and even a purple dinosaur!
The Privacy Basics micro-site is divided into three sections: “What others can see about you”, which is basically about posting, your profile, how people can search you, etc; “How others interact with you” is all about liking, commenting, tagging and the all important unfriending and blocking; and finally, “What you see” which is how you can take control of your news feed and the ads that pop up on your timeline.
The social network giant will also be implementing changes to their privacy and advertising policies, but it is still open for comments and suggestions until November 20. But for now, feel free to explore Privacy Basics which is available in 36 languages, and try to study how you think Facebook can still improve, especially in terms of advertising, which still begs a lot of questions (and complaints). And remember, if you want them to change something, you have to let them know, instead of just, well, ranting on Facebook or other social networks.
