Last month Intel rolled out a new Android tablet reference design aimed at making it easier for manufacturers to get into the tablet market. The Intel Reference Design for Android or IRDA gives these tablet makers a list of officially supported hardware with guaranteed software support.
Tablets built using the IRDA platform are guaranteed to get the latest version of Android within two weeks of Google making the new version available. That is good news for Android fans that want to be on the latest version of the OS at all times.
The first company to make a tablet based on the IRDA design is a German firm called TrekStor and it has rolled that tablet out. The tablet is called the TrekStor SurfTab xintron i 7.0. That is a long name for a tablet featuring a 7-inch screen and an Intel Atom Z3735G Bay Trail processor.
Other hardware features include 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage and the native resolution is 1280 x 800. The rear camera is a 5MP unit and the tablet has a 1.26MP front camera. WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and GPS are built in along with a microSD card slot for expansion. The tablet is up for pre-order in Germany for 134.50 euros.
