Any parent who gives their kids a smartphone knows that can be a disaster if you don’t watch what kids do closely. Unexpectedly large bills from data overages or charges for apps and in-app purchases can really affect a budget. AT&T has launched a new app on Google Play to allow parents of kids using Android devices to put hard limits on what kids can do.

The app is called AT&T Smart Limits and it gives the ability to manage phone use and keep an eye on calling and texting activity. The app allows restrictions to be set for texting, outbound calling, and data use during specific times of day.

Calls and texts from specific numbers can be blocked, as can data access. AT&T is offering the first month of service for the app at no cost. After that 30-days of free use, it will cost $4.99 monthly for one line or $9.99 monthly for up to ten lines.

The app apparently doesn’t capture what people are texting, just the number of texts sent. The app launched October 7 and is 5.2MB in size. Android 2.1 or higher is required to use the service.
