It seems work on Ubuntu for Android has come to a close. We’ve yet to see any sort of formal announcement from Canonical, however a statement that was recently discovered on a bug report mentioned the project is “no longer in active development.”

That bit came courtesy of bug report written on Launchpad by Matthew Paul Thomas. Thomas is with Canonical, and Launchpad is the tracker being used for the Ubuntu project.

“[The website] describes Ubuntu for Android as “the must-have feature for late-2012 high-end Android phones. Ubuntu for Android is no longer in development, so this page should be retired, along with [the features section].”

To clarify here, this is referring to Ubuntu for Android, which was a setup that would allow users to plug their smartphone into a monitor and have access to a regular and complete version of Ubuntu, just as if they were sitting in front of a laptop or desktop. What we had seen looked interesting enough, especially how data such as email and text messages would be available on both the phone and computer sides. You were also expected to be able to make and take calls while in desktop mode.

Having said that, while interesting as a whole, it doesn’t seem to be something very many end-users would need. Sure there would be the geekier in the audience, but that is likely a smaller bunch. Canonical did reach out to Android Authority with a follow-up statement about how taking this project any further would require something they don’t current have — a launch partner. Finally, those not ready to give up hope can take some comfort in knowing Canonical said they remain open should they get OEM interest.
