While it may not be as high profile as, say, the HTC Desire HD, the unnamed Android-based handset set to be announced by Micromax this Wednesday isn’t any less special. Special, in the sense that this marks the first Android handset to be launched by the vendor in India, and it’s always good to see Android landing in markets all over the world. According to Cell Passion, Micromax has a press event scheduled for October 20th, where they will officially unveil their first Android smartphone.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much known about the phone itself. There are grumblings that the smartphone could be an “entry-level” device, and even see the light of day with Android 1.6 under the hood. The smartphone would be upgraded to Android 2.1 in the future, at some point, but the launch would see an out-dated version of Android right out of the gate. Other features could include an HVGA display, with a resolution of 320 x 480. There will also be the standard integrated GPS and WiFi. It could help Micromax that they’re the third largest handset vendor in India, though, and the handset they’re getting ready to show off could indeed be a high-end device. Place your bets now, as the unveiling is coming up.
