Putting old wine in new wine skins is something Samsung isn’t reluctant to do and is quite familiar with. Even when, at least in this case, the new wine skin appears to be quite expensive. Introducing the new Crystal Edition of the Galaxy S III Mini, which does nothing else except try hard at looking more sophisticated than what it really is.
Odd, if not eccentric, cellphone cases are nothing new, but Samsung takes the concept just a bit further by putting its new stylish design directly on the back cover, which will make it practically impossible to use with a protective case. People familiar with jewelry will no doubt recognize the Swarovski brand, and there will be 166 of its crystals decking the Galaxy S III Mini’s back plate. That 166, minuscule, easy to miss from a distance, Swarovski crystals.
They say that beauty is only skin deep, and this Crystal Edition exemplifies it. Nothing has changed in this version of the Galaxy S III Mini and, aside from the fancy back cover, you get the same hardware it launched with 12 months ago. That includes a 1 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal storage, a 4-inch 480×800 resolution display, a 5 megapixel rear camera, and a 0.3 megapixel front-facing camera. Probably something you wouldn’t want to brag about after the initial fascination with its cover.
Samsung says that the Galaxy S III Mini Crystal Edition is designed to attract fashion-conscious women, though perhaps it could also attract certain entities with a penchant for grabbing shiny objects that isn’t theirs. The device has a recommended retail price of 299 euros, or roughly $400. Not exactly pricey for a supposedly fancy device, but definitely expensive for a year-old model.
