Instagram began preparing users for in-feed advertisements a while back. We had known these were coming for quite some time and the talk surfaced again earlier in the month. At that time we were seeing details about how these were going to be arriving in the “next couple months” and how they would initially be delivered as a “small number of beautiful, high-quality photos and videos.”
Well, it looks like the Instagram team has returned with another status update. And this time around we are begin given an updated timeline and also a better look at what can be expected. First and foremost, those in the US are being told they will see a sample ad “in the coming week.” This sample is described as being a “one-time ad from the Instagram team that’s meant to give you a sense for the look and feel.”
A preview of what can be expected can be seen in the image sitting higher up in the post. These will be sent as a regular image in your feed. That is to say you will still see an image and even have the option to like or comment on that image. The main difference appears to be in the upper right hand corner. Instead of a time, you will see the word Sponsored.
Users will also be able to tap that to learn more about how advertising will work on Instagram. Additionally, a tap of the three dots in the lower right will let you tell Instagram that particular advertisement doesn’t interest you. From that you will be able to provide feedback about what you dislike.
Otherwise, there was still mention of how the Instagram team is going to begin with “a handful of brands that are already great members of the Instagram community” and about how they want the ads to be “creative and engaging.” Like it, or leave it, but advertisements will soon be in your Instagram feed.
