Those sporting an AT&T branded HTC One received a bit of good news last week in terms of the Android 4.3 update. That update is expected to begin very shortly, however it looks like Verizon users still have a few weeks of waiting left. That said, a bit of good news for Verizon HTC One users has arrived this morning — S-OFF has been released.
Basically, this is what Verizon HTC One users will need if they want to begin flashing ROMs. The tool has been released by xda users beaups and fuses with root being courtesy of jduck. Perhaps more important here, the tool is available for download today and is called Rumrunner S-OFF.
This release will work with Windows or Linux and needs a 100 percent stock kernel. On that, the developers behind this release have drove that point home by saying “you must be on stock ROM and 100% stock kernel.” Aside from using Windows or Linux (of which a Live Linux CD, USB or VM will work), there is a fairly detailed set of directions.
To begin with, users must remove any lock screen security prior to starting the process. There was also mention that USB 2.0 is preferred over USB 3.0 as the latter may cause connectivity problems.
Anyway, once you have the appropriate version of Rumrunner S-OFF downloaded, you extract, execute and agree to the terms only to sit back and let the exploit do what it needs to do. And for the warning, this does include “several” reboots. Otherwise, while using any tool like this comes with some risk, there does appear to be more than a handful reports of success in the xda-developers forum post.
