Office Mobile arrived for iOS users a few weeks back and as of today the app has arrived for those carrying an Android device. The app is available by way of the Google Play Store and is dubbed Office Mobile for Office 365. The app itself is free to download, however as the name would imply — it is intended for Office 365 users. Specifically, for Office 365 users with an active subscription.
The other requirement for using the Office Mobile app is a smartphone running Android 4.0 or later. Assuming you are an Office 365 subscriber and carrying a compatible smartphone, the app does actually offer quite a bit of functionality. To begin with, Office Mobile means you can access your files while out and about. And in addition to simple access, the app will allow you to view and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents.
The app brings support for features to include charts, animations, SmartArt Graphics and shapes. There is also a resume reading feature which means you will be able to open a file on your smartphone and have it pick up where it was last read — even if that file was last read on another device. Office Mobile also includes Presentation Views which is the Slide Navigator view in PowerPoint. This means the user can browse the slides faster while still keeping your presentation on track with the speaker notes.
Otherwise, Office Mobile for Office 365 allows for access to files stored in the cloud (on SkyDrive or SharePoint), from the recent documents menu panel and from email attachments. Aside from the requirement of an Office 365 account, the resume reading and recent documents features are limited to those with Microsoft Office 2013 installed on a computer.
The Office 365 subscriptions vary and include everything from a Home Premium and Small Business Premium level to options for education and larger offices. The price varies by subscription level, but as an example the Home Premium level includes the latest version of Office as well as an additional 20GB of SkyDrive cloud storage and Skype world minutes for $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year.
