AT&T has released its Q1 2013 earnings report with details of wireless data revenues being up 21 percent and about the addition of 296,000 new postpaid subscribers. In addition to the usual array of numbers, AT&T is also sharing details about how they have the nation’s fastest 4G LTE network.
Diving right in with those network details, AT&T has said the overall network performance has been ranked as (or tied for) number 1 in 14 separate markets. The details here come by way of RootMetrics, who surveyed a total of 23 markets. Shifting over to the more standard details for a quarterly earnings report and we have talk of solid revenue growth, low churn and a record first-quarter in terms of smartphone sales.
AT&T wireless revenues (including equipment sales) totaled in at $16.7 billion, which was up 3.4 percent year over year. The wireless service revenues were also up 3.4 percent for the first quarter. Those service revenues totaled in at $15.1 billion. Additionally, wireless data revenues increased 21 percent (from the year earlier quarter) to $5.1 billion and the first quarter wireless operating expenses totaled $12.0 billion.
Perhaps a bit more easier to digest though, AT&T has added 1.2 million postpaid smartphone subscribers during the quarter and as of the end of the quarter, the carrier had 72 percent (48.3 million) postpaid subscribers using smartphones. To give an idea of growth here, that is up 61 percent from a year earlier. As for that record quarter number, AT&T sold 6.0 million smartphones which accounted for 81 percent of postpaid device sales.
