We’ve been hearing quite a lot lately about Google’s other OS, that being their Chrome OS powering a new wave of ultra-portable laptops. The Chromebook is still in its infancy and the past few days we’ve seen reports that Google may in fact be working on their very own Chromebook. Now it looks like it could be powered by the new NVIDIA Tegra 4, and even have some Android included.

A new NVIDIA Tegra 4 quad-core Cortex-A15 powered Chromebook with the code name “puppy” is apparently out and in the wild as we speak, being used by a few lucky developers. Reports from ChromeStory have uncovered the new Chromebook, the details regarding the Tegra 4, and even hints of Android as well.

We’re not sure if this will be a laptop or maybe some sort of Chromebox, or even something else at this point. Yesterday reports surfaced that Google has their very own device in the works with a Retina display being dubbed the Chromebook Pixel. Here’s where this gets interesting. Google’s used the term “dogfooding” while testing smartphones in the past, and this device is codenamed puppy — so it’s possibly the device we’ve been hearing about coming directly from Google.

Interestingly enough the leak doesn’t reveal too many details, but according to ChromeStory there’s tons of Android code being found in the leak. If Google ends up delivering their own device with a Tegra 4, an HD “Pixel” display, and possibly even dual-boot Android functions this would be amazing. The last bit seems a bit farfetched, but we’re still hopeful.

  1. With the rumors swirling that the Chrome BugDroid statue means we will soon be able to run native Android apps in the Chrome browser, there might not be any need to dual boot at all.

If true, it’s going to be a huge boost to ChromeOS.

  2. Please don’t use the term ‘Retina display’. This is a non-technical marketing term invented by Apple (and probably trademarked by Apple) that has no real meaning. You could say ‘high-resolution’ display, ‘HD display’ or ‘display with a high pixel density’. But please, don’t perpetuate the reality distortion field.

    • You are right but this horse has left the barn unfortunately. One thing Apple does well is brand things. Jobs calls something with a technical description “Retina” and it sticks. Just like he calls voice search “Siri” and now people talk about Siri as an entity, as if it’s someone they had lunch with today.

Yesterday I saw a post where a guy said he wants to “Facetime” on Android. With about a million cross-platform webcam-enabled VOIP apps out there, this clown thinks Apple’s is special because they gave it a non-technical name. Rather than hate Apple for this I choose to blame everyone else for being inept about marketing.

  3. I am flabbergasted at the expression “interesting enough the leak does not provide too many details”. Disqualifies the entire article already. Rubbish.
