1Password is still one of the most popular and arguably the best when it comes to secure, password management. They’re now trying out a different business model as they are offering a monthly subscription for individual accounts at just $2.99/month. And to entice more users, they will be giving you the first six months for free, even if you’re switching from the per-platform licensed account. This is a pretty bold move from Agile Bits, but it is something that may appeal to those who have never tried the service before.

Previously, you had to buy the 1Password license per platform, which can seem a bit expensive for a seemingly simple app. But those who have been loyal users know just how important the service is. Now, they are offering a new kind of pricing model and that is through an individual subscription. We’ve actually seen it in their other services like 1Password Families and 1Password Teams. But this is the first time they’re offering it for individual subscribers, and it will only be at $2.99.

The subscription includes automatic sync across all devices, data loss protection, access to your data through the web, Item History so you can restore items that were lost, secure document storage, and multi-factor security model. You can also cancel anytime you want as there is no lock-in period. The most exciting thing probably is that they are giving you your first 6 months free if you sign up, whether as a new user or you’re switching from the license per platform model.

While a subscription basis may eventually get more expensive than the licensing in the long run if you think about it, the former also offers free updates as long as you’re subscribed so you don’t need to buy the license every time there’s something new. 1Password now also has an Account Key, a randomly generated 128-bit key that you use with your Master Password to make your account much stronger.
