If you have friends who are on iOS, chances are you’ve probably received messages from them that read like gibberish to you. That’s probably because they were sending some new Unicode 8 emojis that still weren’t supported by Android devices. But now, Kika Keyboard has released updates for its virtual keyboard apps and it includes native support for Unicode 8 emojis, the first one to do so for Android devices.
It’s been a few months since the new emojis, around 150 new characters were released and Apple users have been enjoying inserting things like tacos (apparently the most requested one) and unicorns into their messages. But it was only last December 2 when Google’s SVP for Android, Hiroshi Lockheimer, said that some new emojis will be coming to Nexus devices this week and that the fonts and tech details will be shared with OEMs. So that means a few more weeks until they arrive natively for Android devices.
But if you can’t wait that long to send virtual tacos, then you can do so with the updated Kika Emoji Keyboard or the new Emoji Plus keyboard if you’re using a Samsung device. Aside from the Unicode 8 ones, the Kika Emoji Keyboard also carries WhatsApp’s new ones, bringing a total of more than 1200 various emojis and emoticons to your virtual keyboard.
You can download the Kika Emoji Keyboard GIF or the Emoji Keyboard Pro Kika for free from the Google Play Store. The one with Unicode 8 support however works only on devices running on Android 6.0.1 for now.
