If security and privacy is a major thing for you, whether it’s for work reasons or for personal reasons (hey, no judgement here), then you’re probably familiar with Silent Circle and its line of apps like Silent Text and Silent Phone. You of course know then that they released their first smartphone, the Blackphone, last year. Now, the newer version, the Blackphone 2 is set to arrive in the market this September, after being launched at the Mobile World Congress earlier this year.
One advantage that this smartphone has over its competitors is that it comes with its own “Silent OS” (previously known as PrivatOS) which doesn’t allow for bloatware, carrier software and other “leaky data”. It promises a secure space for users, and also includes support for Spaces, a feature for individual users and companies to make isolated OS accounts that will not need to interact with each other.
When introduced at the MWC earlier this year, the Blackphone 2 boasted of a bigger 5.5” 1080p screen and runs on a Qualcomm octa-core processor with a 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage. It also has a 13MP main camera and a 5MP front-facing one. From the screenshots released, it looks like the OS is more heavily customized, although we’re not sure if it’s totally adopted from the Lollipop.
But what it looks like is that the local storage is not encrypted by default, and for a smartphone that promises security, that could be a problem. But let’s wait and see until they officially launch the Blackphone 2 this coming September.
