For those who have been playing a lot of RPGs and dungeon crawlers, you’re probably too familiar already with the gameplay in both genres. And while we like playing the familiar oftentimes, every once in a while, you also look for something different. Guild of Dungeoneering, by indie game publisher Versus Evil, is one of those games. Not only do they offer you a unique version of these genres, but it’s also a game that will be experimenting with the pricing model for mobile games.
You will not be playing the game’s hero, but rather, you will be building the dungeon that he will be moving around in. You build it through a turn-based card game accentuated by pen and paper visuals, catch music and a sense of humor that should make playing it a hoot. Aside from building the various rooms in the dungeon, you also get to entice your heroes to clear them, fight the monsters, and collect the loot that they’ll be able to get through the cards that you’re dealt.
You also get to manage a guild and with the points that you earn, you can level up and unlock new rooms and equipment which you can use as you build your dungeon and get your heroes to play in it. The better your guild, the better chances that you have in getting past the harder dungeons. Versus Evil has had a pretty good reputation as an indie game publisher, with The Banner Saga and the Fear the Walking Dead: Dead Run tie-in with TV show from AMC.
Another thing that makes this game unique is that it will get more expensive, the more content that they add with each consecutive update. But for its initial offering, you can buy the game for $3.99 at the Google Play Store and all the later updates will be free. So if you plan on playing this game for a long time, then you should get it now.
Clever pricing model! I have little interest in playing the game (I like the game’s concept I just don’t really play mobile games) but the temptation to get the time limited deal is compelling me to get it despite myself. Awesome.
