As Google Play Store continues to expand its territory and compete with its rivals specifically Amazon App Store, expect them to add even more countries to their list of those that can sell paid apps on their store. Today, developers from Azerbaijan, Iceland, Peru, and Yemen can now earn money by selling their apps and adding in-app purchases on the Google Play Store.
While users could always buy paid apps before in these four countries, developers did not have the ability to actually sell the programs that they have developed if they were registered in their country. Yes, they were able to publish said apps, but since there was no system in place to actually get renumeration from Google, so they could only post them for free. But now, they can set up a Google Payments account and even get paid in their local currency, like US dollars for Azerbaijan and Yemen, Euro for Iceland, and Nuevo Sol for Peru.
The addition of these four countries now brings a total of 78 countries that can have merchant accounts. Google still has a bit of a distance to cover since there are actually 152 countries that can get Developer Registration at the Google Play Store, but almost half of them still can’t sell. This means that developers in those “unpayable” countries need to find alternative ways of earning money from the apps that they have developed.
Amazon App Store seems to be growing faster, particularly in reaching smaller countries, but that is probably because of their extensive retailer experience. But the more these two reach the developing markets, the better it is for developers everywhere.
