There was a rumor going around that Samsung was not using Sony’s IMX240 camera sensor/module exclusively on its new flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S6. That rumor has been proven true – whether it was caused by a shortage of Sony’s sensors we don’t really know – but some enterprising reporters have checked and found out that their Galaxy S6 has Samsung’s own ISOCELL camera sensor. Now the big question is – is there a difference?
Sam Mobile, that site committed to all phones Samsung, had a chance to play around with two Galaxy S6 models that had each of the different sensors – one from Sony, one ISOCELL. What we have here are some pictures that show the difference – if any – between the two sensors. Take a gander at the pics we’ve posted.
There’s a lot more at the Sam Mobile site, so check out the source link below. At the very least, and if you have very sharp eyes – you will notice that in bright daylight situations, the Sony sensor will give more warmth and color vividness. Not by much, mind you, but noticeable.
The surprising thing was that in low light conditions, you would expect the Sony sensor to outperform the Samsung one, but Sam Mobile says that the ISOCELL sensor performs admirably well during low light conditions – in most cases better than the Sony sensor.
So there. We have the raw truth. It’s up to you to decide if this is a fair deal. Samsung has responded to this issue by saying officially, “The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge utilize camera sensors from several different vendors. Like all of the technology used in our products, they meet our strict global quality and performance standards.”
