D-Link has just announced it’s first entry into the smart home market. While you might already have heard of other similar WiFi-connected plugs, this DSP-W215 Smart Plug does offer a few unique conveniences that make it a wee bit interesting.
First of all, D-Link is advertising an easy “one-click” setup. Or rather two clicks, since all you have to do is click on the WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) button on your router and the similar button on the Smart Plug to connect the plug to your home network. Of course, it would be preferable if you used D-Link’s own routers, but the company says any router that supports WPS will do. Once that’s done, all you need is to download the free mydlink mobile app and you’re good to go.
You do have the usual features you’d find in any plug of this kind, like allowing users to turn off appliances and devices from the mobile app, whether at home or on the go. You can also schedule when these devices, especially lights and lamps, will automatically switch on or off, to conserve electricity and also to give the semblance that someone is currently at home. It even has an energy monitoring feature that will let you follow your electricity consumption to adjust accordingly. But one particularly unique bit of smartness built into the plug is a thermal sensor that will automatically shut down the device when it reaches a certain temperature, making it a useful first defense against potential fire hazards.
The D-Link DSP-W215 Wi-Fi Smart Plug is now available for purchase from D-Link’s online store and carries a price tag of $49.99 a piece. You can also get the mydlink app, which you can use for other D-Link network devices, from the download link below.
