So all of you Fallout fans who were kinda sour at not being able to get that Pip-Boy accessory because you weren’t able to order the deluxe limited edition of Fallout 4, now is your time to rejoice. Or not. The accessory that came with Fallout 4’s release was just a smartphone case that you can strap on to your wrist. But it turns out that Bethesda is actually releasing a Pip-Boy replica – with screen, knobs, hardware, Pip-OS and all – that you can pair with your phone over Bluetooth.
Yep, this is the Pip-Boy: Deluxe Bluetooth edition, which is actually a Pip-Boy Model 3000 Mk IV replica from the game, and it’s up for pre-order now, if you fancy spending USD$350 for it. The whole thing is supposed to emulate the iconic Pip-Boy from the game, although it is a bit heavy at 2 pounds. It makes sure you remember the thing is there, and it has its own software. Most of the dials and knobs work, and there’s a “cosplay” mode that displays realistic screens from the game when you make it part of your great Wasteland costume.
Once you pair it with your smartphone, the Pip-Boy will have a few real-life features that work. It can play audio from your phone, and it can also take and place calls. SMS messages from your phone will show up on the Pip-Boy, and you can place it on a genuine RobCo Industries stand that doubles as a charging base and more powerful speaker option when you’re not using the Pip-Boy.
It’s up for pre-order now, and you’ll have to wait until November for it to ship. The problem is that it being a limited edition – Bethesda will only make 5,000 units of these – you’ll probably have to decide soon if you want to get one, and USD$350 is already the price of a midrange smartphone.
