While there are some things better discussed in messages and typed conversations, there are also times when you need to actually talk to the person or persons you’re conversing with. Carriers have brought down their voice calls cost, but if you have messengers offering free calls, then of course you’d have to take it. If you’re using Slack for business and projects, then you’ll be happy to know that you can now call your contacts and teammates using the app.

This means that Slack can officially compete with other players in the market like Skype and Google Hangouts since you can now add voice calls to the service’s features. This has actually been in beta so some users have already tried it out previously. But now, it’s open to everyone. If you’re using the free version of the app, you will only be able to call one team member at a time. But if you’re on the paid tier, you can host group calls, with as many as 15 people on it at the same time.

If you’re on a desktop or laptop, you can use the app itself to make the calls. Or you can also use the browser version, as long as your browser is Google Chrome. On the upper right of the channel header, you now have a phone icon, so just press it and your call will begin. If you’re using the Android app, you’ll see a “Start a call” button in the channel or DM drop down menu. When you’re in a call, you can even react to the speaker using emojis like smiley face, thumbs up, or hand raised if you need to ask a question.

Slack says they will be adding even more voice calling features later on. This might include video calling and even screen-sharing. But for now, enjoy your one-on-one calls or conference calls.
