Motorola themselves have just confirmed on Twitter what we all were expecting and have previously reported. The WiFi Motorola XOOM tablet is finally set to get the latest and greatest from Google — and that is Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich. While the Verizon 3G/4G enabled version will have to wait all of you with a WiFi model can get the update right now.

For those that haven’t rooted and unlocked their XOOM and are running some sort of custom ROM the Android 4.0 ICS update is available right now — today — and is waiting for you to update. Users should start receiving the over the air update today and it will continue to roll out for the next two weeks. As always, users can manually go to settings > about tablet > and check for updates to manually pull it down. If you’ve been waiting for some official frozen goodness for your XOOM today is the day.

We’ve seen plenty of updates recently for the XOOM. Earlier this month Motorola started pushing a “project” to testers that we later confirmed was ICS so this update comes as no surprise. Sadly ASUS beat them to the punch and were the first with an official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet. So much for being a Google Experience device right guys? For those running custom ROM’s there are more than a few already on ICS, and more will be appearing any day now that the official update is hitting devices.

Give the Android 4.0.3 ICS update a go on your WiFi Motorola XOOM, then chime off in the comments below on what you think or if any issues arise. Full changelog can be seen right here.

  1. i keep trying to check for the updates and it says its up to date… hopefully soon! i have a 32gb wifi only xoom (non family edition)

  2. Hit the hay East Coast tomorrow is our day! That’s when we’ll all scream. Leave it on in the night and wait for it to get the update over night

  3. Gallery sucks.  If they made a desktop application to manage media on ICS and made the media experience like that of Apple’s with tagging and video poster images (graphics) it would be awesome.  Once again, iPad dominates in the entertainment and looks category!  Oh, and much more user friendly for those of us who are non-developers!

    • I did notice my Xoom WiFi is faster running ICS that I downloaded this morning, but it doesn’t feel much different from Honeycomb! 🙁

    • Desktop application – you mean Itunes? Why do apple fans pretend they love Itunes? It has trashed two pc’s of mine, orphaned DRM music files, and was the main reason I jumped ship from IOS … among other reasons – of course. Who needs to be tethered to some desktop software with persistent and disruptive updates? Move into this century already!

ICS on Xoom has been great!

  4. Georgia has ICS! Nice interface updates and some extra features. Where is USB media support? The bundled MyMusic keeps crashing and you cannot remove it.

    • So what if you and a few others pay for extra mobile service . It’s your own fault for buying a device with extra complexaty that requires extra testing .. I bought the wifi version because I have a mifi device from vodafone.
Get your head out of your arse..

  5. I’m in TX and I received the update on Friday.  First I lost all the tasks in Calengoo.  For some reason they were no longer in my gmail calendar so they are just gone which was the first major tragedy.  Now I find the ice cream sandwich doesn’t allow me to add new contacts to the contacts app that came with the tablet.  Me, I’m going back to paper.  Have not found anything secure and reliable since Palm sold to hp.  Anyone want to buy a Xoom???

    • I’m in the panhandle, aka the forgotten part of the state, still no update. I’m not as excited about it as I was. I’ll still download it but I’ve been using my Nexus more than anything lately so I won’t be too disappointed if the update turns out bad.

  7. Any idea how long the update process takes? I have been looking at animated rainbow boxes now for about 45 minutes….

  9. It didn’t take that long to destroy my tablet, maybe just 10 minutes.  I was busy doing other things not paying attention to the time.

  10. I was having problems before with my web searches just closing up on me. A few apps as well. On a daily basis. So far so good, been on it all day and only 1 freeze up compared to 4 or 5. The format on ICS is nicer. Just hope it continues to run smoothly for as much as I use it.

  12. Just finished my update in Northern California.  Tasty little ICS.  I’m hopeful this update will mean more attention to the Android tablet market.  As a former iPad owner the app choices on Android tablets have been lacking so far, but it’s made up for by a variety of other things.

  13. After updating to V.4  I could no longer watch tv shows from cbs.com, nbc.com or abc.com –
the screen shows a small blue cube with a question mark on it. Even youtube does not work in the browser (youtube app works though) .   If given the option I would go back to Honeycomb.

  14. Updated to Android 4 on Motorola Xoom, I have 6000 photos on SD Card, the
Android 4 gallary just cannot handle that, tons of errors and bugs, I wish I
can go back to Android 3

    • Pretty scary to leave 6000 important photos on an SD card. I’d have them off on cloud storage or some other hard drive.

  15. Not lovin’ the update. Can’t mute my Xoom at all and can’t get rid of the annoying loud click that now accompanies every key I type. When clicking links on the web they are often slow to respond or don’t respond at all. Frequently when I click on something , something near it will be activated instead of the thing I clicked on forcing me to go back and try several times to get it right. Often times it just won’t work and I give up. I used to LOVE my Xoom but now I’m disappointed with it. I wish I could go back to Honeycomb.

  16. Cannot UNMUTE my XOOM anymore, tried via settings -> Volume, nothing works !! Help
This is basic functionality that should not have been overlooked !!!

  17. More things to hate about the update on my Xoom..Can’t navigate Facebook; Things I could previously click on appear to be inactive links. I’m sure they aren’t inactive they just don’t do anything after the update; Web pages are cut in half. The entire bottom half of web pages are blank. This is so disappointing,

If anyone can tell me how to turn off the annoying clickigng when I type PLEASE let me know. I went to setting/sound and unchecked touch sounds but that did nothing. Neither did rechecking it, which I didn’t really expect it to do.

  18. To mute the typing sounds, go to Settings>Languange and Input and click on the synthesizer bar to the right of Android keyboard. Then deselect Sound on Key press.

  19. I have had to hard reset 4 times today, Sleep mode turns into shut down and must hard reset otherwise it wont turn on, since the ICS update…internet now lags and adds a red underline under the first word I type.

  20. I love my Xoom because it is different than what most people have however since the ics update, some problems have come up. I own the wifi only version.

    1. Won’t lock screen when in the dock and goes to clock mode.
    2. Gallery sucks. Cannot delete some files. Movies still have no option to set thumbnail as a artwork picture.
    3. Sometimes after the Xoom is not being used it will display nothing on the screen after being turned on.
    4. Multiple apps still do not work properly, and the browser is slow as a motha.

I know these bugs will be fixed in time. I just wish the user experience was much better. I hate Crappie, but that’s why their devices are so appealing. It’s because of the user experience. Come on Android. Work on his and we’ll all win!

  21. Since the update the format for the bookmarks stinks…I have MANY bookmarks and instead of them showing as a list they show as icons with tiny captions that you can hardly read under the icons. Does anyone else have this problem or a fix for it.

  22. I own the original Xoom WiFi tablet.  The ICS update now causes my tablet to turn on the display randomly.  When I want to use it, the the tablet is dead.  I  researched the web, reset the tablet to factory new, reloaded apps.  Can’t tell if one of the apps is causing it, but the tablet is behaving poorly again.  Can I undo the update, or should I just try to root the device and use a better ROM?

    • Hi, I was fed of waiting and in the end installed the American from and straight away was offered several updates and now running pics. It seems much slicker to me. There are loads of tutorials out there just make sure you back up.

    •  Don’t feel special….I’m in the USA with a stock, unrooted wifi-only XOOM and still don’t have ICS 4.0.3, not to mention the 4.0.4 upgrade now being pushed.

  23. So, is there any way that folks have found to get back to Honeycomb?

Crashes were common in the past on the Xoom, but now they occur more often, and in applications that used to be solid.  Asphalt 6 is no longer recognized after 9 months of joyful play.  New version requires the screen be held at an 85 degree angle when using the accelerometer just to “drive straight”.  New Tintin game from GameLoft loaded, but won’t even start up.  Movies stored on SD card started to multiply and showed 10 duplicate copies, as well as bogus symbols being saved as multiple files.

If this is supposed to be an improvement then it’s headed in the wrong direction!  I have lost all confidence in Android, and should have followed the advice of my friends and gotten an iPad.
This is not the way to create a competitive product – Apple must be loving all these horror stories!  A better piece of hardware doesn’t do any good when it is only reliable in serving as a shim to stop a table from rocking.

Looks like most other responders are having similar and different problems as well.

  24. I have a friend who tired of waiting for ICS for his Xoom (WIFI + 3G/4G) has found a way to get ICS on his device – in his words ‘with ICS Xoom is a worthy competitor to iPad’ so why oh why are we still waiting Google????? With the acquisition of Motorola I was looking forward to regular updates (as promised) for Android but alas this has not happened.

I am like a lot of people, I like Xoom because is it different to iPAD, much more customisable, it can plug into my laptop and act as another drive, I have an SD card slot etc. etc. plus Android which I prefer to IOS – but c’mon google competing successfully with Apple in the phone market is great but please get your act together and do the same for the Tablet market, at the moment you are getting a negative press

  25. I’m in Holland, using a UK wifi only Xoom which is still running 3.2 Honeycomb. There is still no update available according to my system update. How do I get to ICS?
I love it on my Samsung Galaxy SII 🙂

  26. I have an Acer Iconia Tab A500 Honeycomb (I think). I changed my sound and acidentlay clicked the MUTE button. I clicked it again 109 times, and it wouldent unmute. I could unmute it before update. Anyone know how to Fix? My sound bumper is broken, so don’t say anything including that.

  27. The JellyBean update just installed on my Xoom tablet and the Wifi is no longer working. I can’t join any networks. It was connected during the upgrade, then it rebooted and the same network just says “saved”. I can’t connect to it and if I “forget” it, it just reloads and goes back to “saved”. I am on business travel in a hotel and my tablet just became unusable.
Also, the boot-up splash screen still displays the ice cream sandwich graphics, but after it is booted, it shows Jelly Bean features.
My Xoom does not have 3G, it is only a Wi-Fi device, so I’m currently dead in the water with no network.
    HELP!!
