Ok, so this might be a bit of a game changer if true. Sources from the UK are saying that Google is thinking about releasing their own smartphone. At the very least, they are now talking to mobile operators with their idea of coming up with a Google-branded phone. This will literally put the search giant in head-to-head competition with Apple and the iPhone.

Of course, you might say that Google already recommends hardware through the Google Nexus branding. If you know your Android, you would understand that the Nexus line is a showpiece brand of products to show off Android – and Google partners with manufacturers like Samsung, LG, HTC and recently Huawei to build these phones. They are not really Google-branded hardware.

Sources in the UK say that the new Google-branded phone will be released late this year, and a senior source says that Google would like to “take more control over design, manufacturing and software.” Ben Wood, an analyst at CSS Insight is saying that Google might want to make Android more consolidated and less fragmented. “They are concerned that Android is fragmenting, that it needs to become a more controlled platform,” Wood added.

So, we’re expecting to see Android N unveiled soon, and then some new Nexus phones. But a new Google-branded phone by the end of the year? Pretty wild rumor there, but you never know. We’ll file this under “we’ll start to believe it when we see more information.”
