Sony Xperia Z3 plus

Hardware ratings are important and one of the most trusted groups out there is DxoMark. When it comes to assessing video and photo imaging quality of mobile devices, you can trust DxoMark to provide a comprehensive review even listing down the pros and cons of a particular model. This time, let’s discuss about the review on the not-so-new Sony Xperia Z3+ which is also known as the Xperia Z4 in Japan.

The Sony Xperia Z3+ is almost the same as the Xperia Z3. It’s a bit slimmer and lighter and now runs the latest 64-bit Octa-core Snapdragon processor which is more powerful compared to the 801 in the previous model. It’s still waterproof and seems to have better cameras. Looking at the specs, you will think nothing much has changed but according to DxOMark and after several industry standard tests, the Xperia Z3+ is definitely a better Z3.

Actually, there are contrasting ideas. Just last week, we reported that the Xperia Z3 outperforms the Z4, thanks to the Snapdragon 810 chipset. We also heard of some heating issues but Sony Xperia Z3+’s overall DxOMark Mobile score is 82. Checking its camera, it scored 84 and was found to have a good overall exposure, colors, white balance, and low noise even in low-light conditions or outdoors. Detail preservation is also impressive while autofocus in bright conditions is accurate and fast.

There are only a few problems like sharpness difference noticeable in some images especially between the corners and the center. Sometimes, white balance is inaccurate when flash is used with Tungsten illuminant.

Mobile Video score is slightly lower at 79 but it’s still impressive. There’s good texture preservation, good stabilization, lens-breathing correction is effective. On the other hand, autofocus on video is slow and a few stabilization artifacts are noticeable on indoor walk test.

Here are some sample images taken using the Sony Xperia Z3+ as part of the industry tests:

The recent high score achievement of the Sony Xperia Z3+ brings it just below the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge and the Galaxy Note 4, beating Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus and the iPhone 6.

Sony phones are always expected to capture the best quality images and videos because Sony cameras are supposed to be good. On the Xperia Z3+, contrast and exposure scored high. It’s the same with noise, flash, texture, and autofocus–all getting good scores that help the camera achieve a well-balanced image.

The DxoMark tests proved that images are well-expored but some details are lost in high-contrast scenes. Exposure was also discovered to be inaccurate at times and they are noticeable in extreme low-light levels. Colors are vivid but not really good under tungsten.
