Not all intersections are created equal. There are those that are just simple enough that you just have to wait for your turn to drive through them. And then there are those that will require all your concentration and attention and causes you much stress every time you would approach it. Los Angeles residents apparently have their fair share of these kinds of intersections and so Waze is introducing a feature in the city first, of course calling it Difficult Intersections.

Basically, what it does is to minimize your “contact” with this hyperlocal driving issue by avoiding as much as possible these difficult intersections. This is to give you a much safer and of course less stressful drive. They worked closely with the LA local map editor as well as the employee community and their Connected Citizens Program partner (which is the City of Los Angeles) in the area to identify these problem areas. But they were also able to provide alternate solutions to reroute drivers from the intersections.

However, rerouting can also mean that you’ll get to your destination stress-free but maybe just a few minutes later than expected if you actually went through the intersections. And it also doesn’t guarantee that you will never pass through them, just that it will minimize the difficult intersections you’ll go through. So drivers still have a choice of disabling the feature, which is automatically turned on for Los Angeles drivers. Just go to the settings and turn the feature off.

The Difficult Intersections feature is only available for the Los Angeles area for now. They will be adding New Orleans soon and even other global cities, depending on what the Waze community will be identifying and then demanding.
