The Variable NODE modular sensor was a kickstarter back in 2012 that eventually was fully funded and became a real product. Fast forward just about a year and today the company has announced their first Android compatible NODE sensor, and it’s available now for just $149. What is a NODE? More details can be found below.

Without getting too crazy, their NODE is almost like a tricorder. It’s a handheld wireless sensor platform that can gather details and information about all types of things around you. Which then can be used in apps to gather information and use sensory data from all around us. It’s a bit of a novelty device, but now we have one for Android.

Combining advanced motion-sensing technology with interchangeable sensor modules the NODE features a 9 degrees-of-freedom motion engine (gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetometer) as well as Bluetooth, BT LE, and a flashlight module. All of these are modular can be swapped out for what need. Things like Gas sensors to detect gases such as CO, NO, NO2, Cl2, SO2, and H2S. The flashlight tip is neat, and other tips for climate sensors and even a thermostat. Even the motion sensing can be used in animation projects or for physical therapy. It’s really quite neat.

With micro-USB for charging the device will then be ready to pair to a smarpthone, which now they have an Android compatible model, and sync all the data to the accompanying application. You can change settings, tweak how the sensors are reading, and even control that flashlight. It might be a bit confusing, so you can find more details on the Variable NODE from the link below. Their faster Android model is $149, or iOS users can grab it for $99 and go wild.
