Good news for the few rocking a Toshiba Thrive tablet. Their 10-inch model is finally getting the much awaited update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Toshiba is a little behind on their initial announcement dates for the update, but at least it’s finally available. More details after the break.

Toshiba originally detailed an early spring release date for their ICS rollout for the Thrive tablets, but that never happened. Quickly that update schedule was pushed back to “this summer” and eventually to “early fall.” Today however it’s finally available for download as we speak.

As usual, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich brings plenty of changes, features, enhancements and more. Performance has been improved, as has the browser, Face Unlock should be available, and many other things I’m sure you’ve already known about for months while waiting. Overall this update should only improve the hefty tablet.

Toshiba also specifically mentions audio/video fixes and enhancements, improved WiFi signal strength, as well as enhanced camera features — but that was also a feature of ICS. For those looking to dive in the process is simple. Just launch the “Service Station” app and check for updates, or head to the forum link below for more details. The 7-inch tablet will be waiting a bit longer, hang in their folks!

  1. I am trying for the fourth time to download the update. Everytime I get within about 80% loaded the table tells me that my mifi connection is not there. That is bogus since I am looking at my systems and it is still up and running my other equipment. Any other way to get this update without having to keep trying for hours on end?

  2. Have tried 3 times for new update, not happy. Talks about wifi connection. Hope Tosiba is able to fix it’s update problems.

  3. I was able to download it. For some reason it was glitchy for about 20 minutes as old honeycomb programs updated. Afterward…..folks hang onto your seats. ICS is simple and elegant. It’s exactly what we deserved all along…oh and the startup time for my thrive dropped from 4 minutes to a little over a minute. Yes, it’s worth the wait. I’m still angry I had to wait all these months for it…but I can’t complain anymore.

  4. Also, we are now installing an “old” version of Android because Jelly Bean (i.e. Android 4.1) was released a month ago.

  5. Just downloaded. It took about 30 minutes but no timeouts or other WiFi issues that others have mentioned. After the long download… when I hit update, it took about 5 minutes to update. So far so good.

    • same thing happening to me. After several tries, it finally did a complete download, but after that, all I’m seeing is the Toshiba logo, and it won’t do anything else. Seems to b
      e stuck.

  6. I was able to solve the problem by going to wifi settings and switching it to be always on when connected to power. The wifi was disconnecting when the screen went off. No face lock in this ICS. How lame…

  7. Someone else is using my username. I still can’t get it downloaded. IS there a way to download it and copy it to my Thrive and install it?

  8. Abu, that’s interesting because while the download was going my screen never shut off and it just stopped saying I had a WiFi problem (which I don’t since all my other browsing and application updates have no problem).

  9. Tried 3 more times last night with no success. Tried again this morning before work and although it was going very slow it had downloaded more of it than it had in previous attempts so maybe it will be downloaded when I get home tonight. Crossing Fingers.

  10. Was able to dl the update successfully this morning, i miss the icon i had for settings the new one is rather blocky looking and the wallpapers tab?screen is awol, getting a few more process errors than normal, getting used to the new swype keyboard, need to experiment and see if the speakers work better now, i miss how loud they used to be when i first got mine, they may have sounded tinny but at least i could hear them. I need to dig around a bit more, but so far i like it

    • Click on your service station app>check for updates>download ics. The update does take quite a while to download so be ready to wait.

  11. Download took about an hour so be patient. Once the download starts, leave it alone and let it do its thing! Remember people, it is an operating system and large download. So far, working great!

  12. I’ve been having problems since update. Constant crashes & freezes, and it’s not very friendly with Facebook. Has anyone found any solutions to these problems? I used to love my thrive, now I just want to throw it out the window.

    • Is the OS crashing or the Apps? Check if all the widgets you are using are compatible with ICS. I used to have 1 widget keep crashing the homescreen until I remove it

      • Wow, I didn’t think of that. It seems to be mainly when I use fb. I wonder if I uninstall & reinstall fb if that will help. Thank you.

  13. I have just upgraded to ICS (Toshiba Trhive 10), after the download, installation went thru without any issues. I have been testing all my applications, all seems to be working. I don’t see any issues, performance is much better. Thank you Toshiba

  14. I just finished mine and I am very happy wth the upgrade. All of my programs are still working, with no changes to my saved photos or data. Thank you Toshiba for waiting and getting this right.

  15. I had no problem with the download or install. Everything is working…except USB connection to Windows. It makes the connection but sees nothing there. Anyone else run into this?

  16. I updated my thrive didnt have any problems, but the sound isnt nearly as loud , i miss only puting my speak on one click to hear the game sound now i have to put it at least halfway up to hear it. anyone know if theres a fix to this

  17. I’m having few problems mostly with apps. They crash or takes longer to load. Also I’m not able to watch any videos on YouTube or the web.I’m not able to connect through Skype, everything happened after the update was complete.

  18. My update has my browser crashing consistantly. I, too, want to go back to the previous version. And I just hate the layout of Facebook :0( UHG

  19. Really happy with update. It always media streaming from my WNDR3700 router, which has an attached SB hardrive. Now, I can access all my media through the Toshiba Media Player, and means I now have essentially unlimited storage within my home network area. This was the one thing the Thrive lacked that I really wanted. Turns the Thrive into a true media centre.

  23. Browser crashes constantly since the upgrade. I have had it. This thing is getting to be as useful as a brick. I want the old version back or a fix for this.

  25. Im from Canada and still no access to this update BUT i read somwwhere that our version will be delayed till late september… I have a funny feeling our American neighbors are being used as guinea pigs as so many have issues while others are just laughing away in enjoyment. Just my 2 cents…

  26. You will either love it or regret doing it. Seems rooted aren’t having as much problems. I’m not rooted and browser crashing or freezing constant…and not just stock. Also tried Dolphin, Chrome, & Firefox…so it aint browser…it’s ICS affecting OS. Upgrade went smoothly but been pain in a** ever since. HATE IT. And regret doing it and no way to uninstall it either.

  27. I have been having the same issues as everyone else, so today I took a chance and formatted the cache partition……….works awesome so far, fingers crossed it stays that way

  28. Can anyone please tell me where to turn off background data post ics update? It used to be in accounts and sync in 3.2 but is not there any more and is killing my battery life. Thanks in advance

  29. downloaded and installed the update…..HATE IT!!!! Nothing works anymore…can’t type (on the laptop now) as the keyboard won’t come up, go into settings and it keeps kicking me back out, wifi keeps getting interrupted…just want to go back to the old OS PLEASE!!!!

  30. I just installed Android 4.0 with no issues during the process, but now I don’t have a keyboard, get an error “Open of EngilishUS Failed” I can’t do much now…no browsing, I can’t even search to find out where to fix this, has to boot up the old laptop just to send this!!! Anyone else having the same issue and know how to fix it?

  31. Fixed the problem mentioned in my previous post, had to go into language and input settings and re-select everything, seems ok now!

  32. Since update have had problems…freezes, crashes, not user friendly with Facebook, Wi-Fi sometimes doesn’t work, constantly have to reboot….I hate it!!!!!

  33. I also have the browser crashing problem. My browser crashes all the time. It’s almost unusable now. My system also freezes up a lot now and I have to pull the battery out in order to restart it. With this update I see NO benefits and only problems. Even 3,2 wasn’t very good as playing video in my browser lead to a lot of hangups and crashes. Oh, well maybe one day I will get stable tablet from Toshiba.
