For many, celebrating on New Year’s Eve means watching the ball drop at midnight. In the past that meant either being in Times Square or sitting in front of a television. But thanks to mobile tech, those same rules no longer apply. This isn’t the first year there has been a mobile Times Square Ball Drop app, however the official app from Countdown Entertainment has been updated for 2013/2014.

The app is called “Times Square Official Ball App” and as one would expect given the name — it can be used to watch the ball drop at midnight. Along with watching the ball drop, the app also offers some other goodies. Users with the app will be able to watch the official show which features musical performances, celebrity appearances, reveler interviews and hourly countdowns.

This most recent update for the app includes new Twitter integration as well as what is described as being “much better video stream compatibility.” The design has also been “simplified” for 2014. That all being said, the app is currently sitting at version 3.0.0 and with support for devices running Android 2.3.3 or later.

Aside from the relaunch of the app, Countdown Entertainment, along with Times Square Alliance and Citi have announced that the Pedal Citi Bike bicycles will help power the Times Square Ball this year. This was a program that started a few days earlier and will end before the ball officially drops. Basically, these companies have set up six Citi Bike bicycles that will be ridden to collect kinetic energy to help power the lights on the New Year’s Eve Ball.
