The Open Handset Alliance is very pleased to announce the addition of 14 supporting companies. The members of the Open Handset Alliance show their support for Android as an open mobile platform. We can expect these companies to further develop Android handsets and services.

The new members include, AKM Semiconductor Inc., ARM, ASUSTek Computer Inc., Atheros Communications, Borqs, Ericsson, Garmin International Inc., Huawei Technologies, Omron Software Co. Ltd, Softbank Mobile Corporation, Sony Ericsson, Teleca AB, Toshiba Corporation and Vodafone. Many companies overseas have jumped onboard a little later than we had expected.

These new members will develop Android-powered handsets, contribute significant code to the open source project, or support the “ecosystem” by providing supporting services. We are really glad to see Ericsson and Vodafone among others joining the Open Handset Alliance. Who we really would like to see Nokia jump on board with handsets comparable to their N-series.

  1. Oooh, Garmin. Now that's interesting.

I really wish Nokia would stop with their Symbian lust and go with Android.

I love Symbian a lot, but Android on their handsets would just be fun.
  3. This is a big step for android as more and more companies join the OHA. This makes androids future look much much brighter. What i would really like to see is more handset manufactures join the OHA as ultimately they would decide on what OS they would ship a phone with.
  4. That's awesome. There are a lot of great companies in there. Sony Ericsson, Garmin, Vodafone, Toshiba, etc. I think we'll be seeing some extremely innovative products coming out utilizing android in the future!
  5. This has to be good news. I hope some of them jump in both feet. I loved my Garmin XT software on my Dash. So, maybe we will have several options on GPS turn by turn within 6 months.
  6. So who will put out the G2 next year?

My thoughts is that it will be Garmin or ASUS.

  7. asus ftw. garmin will make a uber 1337 gps unit with android though.
  8. Ok this is a weirdish question but what does it cost them to join the OHA and are they under any obligations to it. The reason I ask is, could a rival company not simply join the OHA to find out what they are going to be doing and alter their own business plan based on this, even if there is a cost involved it might be a worthwile investment.
  9. sony ericsson joining is quite interesting, ive always loved their phones more than nokia, looking forward to their first android-based phone
  10. Don't you mean "...help develop Android." not "...help develope Android."

You guys are my go-to site right now, but you could really use an editor or spell checker or something.

    *cough*maybe me?*cough*
  11. Nice team shaping up. Only Google could have brought this many people together.
  12. As more and more handset manufacturers join the Open Handset Alliance software developers such as DataViz are getting onboard with Android. DataViz will be bringing their mobile office suite, Documents To Go and their Exchange ActiveSync client, RoadSync to the ever growing Android OS in 2009.
