We’ve had a lot of application updates and releases this week so far. Continuing with the excitement is Netflix for Android. It has just received another rather large update and is available now. Too bad streaming is still so-so for Android, we were hoping for an HD version for tablets but are still patiently waiting for that. Details after the break.

The update, which brings Netflix on Android to version 1.7 has added Facebook sharing for non-US users, as well as a few various improvements and bug fixes like most updates should. The biggest new feature though is on-screen volume controls for tablet users. Yes software volume instead of hardware controls that get in the way of the display while watching a movie. The image above nicely shows the new volume slider. (Don’t mind the Charlie Sheen Roast)

The developers from Netflix have also solved some audio related issues and stuttering, as well as improved the overall audio/video sync on both smartphones and tablets. The last and minor update was regarding screen flickering. For those experiencing flickering or weird artifacts while streaming Netflix on tablets that should also be resolved with today’s update. It is available now so head to the market and give it a try. Now lets just keep hoping for an HD version for tablets.

Verizon has been busy today, updating tons of their Android devices from the XYBOARD tablets to the DROID RAZR and more. Apparently another made the cut and they are now pushing a small update to the not so widely known Casio G’zOne Commando rugged smartphone. If you have one you know it can handle the elements — and today it just got even better.

This durable smartphone that can basically be trashed in any possible way and still come out working great is receiving an over the air update today that should bring some enhancements to performance, not to mention new features and abilities. The most notable change for the G’zOne Commando is push-to-talk has been added to the device. Making this great for construction workers and anyone needing the push-to-talk ability with no additional monthly charge.

The update starting rolling out last night and if you’ve not received the update yourself feel free to go to menu > settings > about phone > and check for updates to enjoy the latest changes. We are also hearing some bugs and problems have been fixed, battery life should be decently improved, not to mention a few tweaks to improve signal. All the details and instructions are available from the image of changes above, and the official Verizon link below. Try out that new Verizon Video app too if you’re bored at work.

Who’s ready for some tasty Ice Cream Sandwich this afternoon? HTC has just issued a statement minutes ago, and released some official information regarding their updates to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on popular HTC handsets. They have released small details and confirmed updates were coming but today’s announcement makes it officially coming in March for many phones.

Over on their Facebook page they have just this morning announced the HTC Sensation will be the first to Android 4.0 ICS. Stating that the first round of updates will roll out by the end of March. So we should be seeing them start to roll out a little before that period. First round will be the HTC Sensation, T-Mobile Sensation 4G, and the Sensation XE.

In addition to those few, they’ve also just confirmed a number of popular HTC devices are slated to get the same update very soon, but sometime after March. We knew most devices lately would be updated but here’s the initial list right from HTC themselves: HTC Rezound, HTC Vivid, HTC Amaze 4G, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G, HTC Incredible S, HTC Desire S and HTC Desire HD. That list isn’t looking good for Thunderbolt owners!

HTC has also stated that they’ll be announcing more details and have more updates in the next few weeks regarding all their popular Android devices. This has literally just hit the wires so we’ll be digging for more information and will report back shortly.

Angry Birds isn’t going anywhere quite yet. Although things like Temple Run are getting big the flying and obnoxious birds are here to stay. Today Rovio is celebrating their 2-year anniversary and are doing so with full-fledged update to the original Angry Birds with 15 new birthday themed levels full of cake.

This update has a lot of good things but one part I’m a little unsure about is they’ve unlocked every single level for all users. That means you wont have to earn it like the rest of us that wasted hours and hours of our lives. Firstworldproblems right? The update is available today, right now in the Android Market. The 15 new levels has also boosted them up to over 300 Angry Bird levels — impressive to say the least.

They’ve even introduced a new orange expandable bird character to make things even easier for those that want to play all those levels again, or for newbies looking to launch some birds for the first time. The menu’s have been tweaked and Rovio mentions a few improvements to the graphics too. I know many might be sick of the Angry birds by now but if you aren’t, you’ll want to head to the market right now and give it a try. Have fun!

Google’s been busy this week with all sorts of exciting new updates. From Google Chrome for Android to a brand new overhauled Google Voice. Today they’ve issued a massive update to their social network Google+ application with tons of new features. Mainly stating “massive performance improvements across the app”.

Google has been updating their social app quite often to make sure it is steady, stable, and quick. Something the Facebook app for Android could use some help with. Looking over the “What’s New” from the image above we can see an entire host of changes with today’s update. Here is the full change log:

–Massive performance improvements across the app
–What’s Hot!
–View who +1′d a post or comment
–Stream posts shortened to fit more per scroll
–Infinite photos feed in ‘From your circles’
–Stream no longer jumps to the top for an automatic refresh

From my initial few minutes with the latest update things do seem to be running swiftly as I flip through pages, posts, and circles. The streams being shortened to fit more per scroll doesn’t appear to have changed too much. It looks like the previews are just slightly smaller. One of the biggest changes and something I’ve been extremely frustrated with is the automatic refresh jumping to the top. What a pain that has been. I’m extremely glad to see they’ve fixed that minor oversight. The update has just landed and is available right now. Check for updates or hit the market link below to enjoy the latest from Google. Don’t forget to circle us at +AndroidCommunity

Good news for all the ASUS Transformer Prime owners today folks. You should have a new update ready to install for your Android 4.0 powered tablet this afternoon. Today ASUS has officially started pushing their latest update to the quad-core device and it should be fixing a number of problems and enhancing overall performance.

If you haven’t received the notification go into settings > about tablet > firmware updates and give it a go today. It is rather small and will download in a matter of seconds. The update will bring the Prime to build 9.4.2.13 and along with it comes a new kernel and improvements yet again to WiFi and GPS. We are also hearing this update to the kernel should not only enhance battery life and increase performance, but will solve the random reboot issue introduced with the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update.

It appears the bluetooth version received a small change here too, but so far that seems to about all. Once we find a full change log we’ll update. After initial installation I’m not noticing anything different here and performance seems swift as always. I didn’t have problems with WiFi before so I can’t comment here. The new build is 9.4.2.13-20120203 and was just compiled a few days ago, for those interested. Feel free to sound off in the comment section below if you notice any major changes or have problems — We’d love to hear. Now if we could only get that bootloader unlocked then everything would be good.

Not only does Motorola want to keep us active, but they are staying plenty active themselves and today have just announced another update for their MOTO ACTV device. Announcing that it will be released worldwide and free starting March 7th bringing tons of new features to the Android-powered smartwatch.

The MOTO ACTV is more than just a smart wristwatch. From the image above you can see it’s also mountable on bikes and can do tons of different tasks. The update set to hit March 7th will bring even more features and functionality. According to the blog post from Motorola we can expect to be able to track performances and stats across over 40 new activities including yoga, Pilates, dancing and martial arts to name a few.

The update back in December brought new clock faces, stopwatch support, and increased battery life severely. We can expect a few more improvements to overall performance and battery life with this upcoming update as well. With the option to track yoga, Pilates and all these other new activities we’ll need all the battery life we can get.

Other changes include being able to activate the display by the flick of your wrist, and even enable and change WiFi right on the device. Stay tuned for more details on the impending update.

A mystery update for Google Voice has just landed in the Android Market this afternoon. Google is busy today and has just released Google Chrome for Android, and now we are getting a redesigned Google Voice app with awesome UI improvements and tablet features. The updated Icon is being shown in the market but apparently the update isn’t pushing out yet, but we were able to quickly install it through the web Android Market here.

First off, the entire user interface, icon, and menu’s have all been updated to go along with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Complete with the color changes and all as you can see from the new cyan blue icon. Then in the image above you can see the new click-to-call feature that has been added to Android 4.0 tablets. We gave it a quick try and it worked great. The phone interface has also received these same changes, obviously, and looks pretty nice and more in line with what we’ve seen from Google lately.

The tablet version has also received the People app from ICS and you can initiate a Google Voice call right from the contacts tile, or image inside your People tab in Ice Cream Sandwich. Everything else from the what’s new list was all included with previous updates and we still have yet to receive the new final change log. Once this update starts rolling out officially we should know more. If you have troubles downloading the new update try it on the web market linked to below. Even if it says “installed” give it a click and get the latest. Someone didn’t do something right that is for sure, but we are enjoying it anyways.

Today our favorite Android developer Steve “cyanogen” Kondik has just updated everyone with a few details and essentially a progress report of their popular CyanogenMod 9 project. While most of us are currently running Android 2.3 Gingerbread with CM7, many are patiently awaiting CM9 to officially land for their devices. Today Cyanogen himself had a few details to share with everyone on their official blog.

For those that don’t know, CyanogenMod is a custom ROM for Android built completely from the official Android source from Google — AOSP. They do everything the right way the first time and make some of the best, fastest, most highly customizable ROM’s for Android and are the number one developers for a reason. With CM9 comes Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and its many many changes. Both visually and under the hood.

Sadly Android 4.0 ICS was such a huge change both visually and graphically that most devices need improved and updated graphics drivers, and many other things that they simply cannot get until they are released from the respected manufacturers. Regarding CM9 for most devices this is what Steve had to say:

For many devices, our hands are tied. Some very clever workarounds have gone into CM9, but we’re still blocked on some subsystems like the camera.

With many devices getting essential functions such as camera drivers for pictures and video is just not possible. Releasing a less than stellar product with a main device functionality missing isn’t something they’d like to do — and wont be starting now.

There is good news here though. Being able to completely tackle a brand new OS with huge changes such as ICS, instead of Gingerbread has allowed them to completely take a second view of things. It’s allowed them to rethink everything, see what is truly useful and needed, and trash the rest. While we’ll still have the awesome tweaks, changes, and customizations we all know and love in CyanogenMod they will also be bringing the term “just works” to the ROM. Making sure everything is as smooth and stable as ever.

We’ve eliminated the CMParts app, instead choosing to add our custom features directly into the main settings. We hope to achieve a good balance between tweakability and a great out-of-the-box experience. I want your phone or tablet to feel like it should have come with CM9.

So there it is. They want our devices to feel like they came out-of-the-box with CM9. I’ve been wishing for an official CyanogenMod Phone for a long, long time and hopefully one day that comes true. In the meantime we can expect more devices with official CM9 support soon. Especially Samsung devices and some Qualcomm powered smartphones too. All the details and information in his words can be found on the CyanogenMod Blog.

We recently shared some information regarding an upcoming update that was in the testing phase for the Motorola DROID Bionic but today we can happy tell all you Bionic owners that the update is ready and rolling out now. Officially being pushed to the Verizon support page we have all the details and a full change log below.

The update should be hitting devices any time now and you can start by checking for updates right on your device as usual by going into settings > about phone > and checking for updates. The update is about 57 MB in size and should only take a few minutes. The update isn’t anything major like the last one, or bring Ice Cream Sandwich but the change log does give us a few good ideas of what to expect.

Looking at the details below we see tons of changes and improvements to stability — something Bionic owners have been plagued with. They’ve also updated battery life, audio and video while streaming over HDMI, fixed some in-call audio interruptions and more. Then they specifically mention not only phone stability, but data stability too. I know from first hand experience the Bionic seems to drop data and for longer periods of time than most of my Verizon 4G LTE devices laying around.

As usual a few Verizon apps and bloatware have been added or updates, but that is to be expected. The update is rolling out in stages and should be landing soon. Check out the change log image below for all the details, and be sure to let us know once you get the update how everything goes. I’m interested in those data connection improvements. If you are rooted and are worried about loosing it give OTA RootKepper a try.

Lenovo has just detailed and tipped our friends from SlashGear off regarding their update timeline for the ThinkPad Tablet. While they didn’t give us an extremely clear idea they were nice enough to mention the update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be here inside of Spring 2012. Basically within the next few weeks, or a couple of months.

Along with the awesome UI and performance improvements from 4.0 ICS we’ll also get the face unlock features shown on the Galaxy Nexus too. The ThinkPad tablet was one of the few Honeycomb tablets to also come with built-in navigation buttons, and those obviously will be sticking around with Ice Cream Sandwich as they are a part of the tablet. So we’ll have two options for navigation.

Lenovo didn’t give any details on their K1 tablet but we should expect an update to land for both of their Honeycomb tablets within a similar time frame. Along with the improved browser, voice input, face recognition, and more the stylus and mouse support will be even more present with Ice Cream Sandwich. This was a business minded tablet before — and will be the same moving forward. Users can expect the over-the-air update to land soon, so stay tuned.

The popular 3rd party keyboard maker Swype promised an update to support Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich back at the beginning on January. Stating it would arrive before the end of the month. Now that we are slowly getting into February it should be coming any day now. Who is ready for some official Swyping on their Galaxy Nexus?

We say who is ready for official Swype because an unofficial hacked version with full Swype support has been around for well over a month. The Swype team was just making sure it is perfect before releasing it to the public. According to a few new tweets an update is only “days away” that will bring Ice Cream Sandwich support and tons of other goodies too.

Make sure to be signed up for the Swype Beta right here, as it will be available to beta testers first and then be pushed as an over the air update to official Swype users after a few days of testing as long as all goes well. Swype should be updating soon and we’ll also learn what these new “goodies” are that were mentioned in the tweet above. Stay tuned for more details.

Note: The tweets were from February 1st so this update should be here any minute now.

Motorola is getting set to release yet another update to their popular Motorola DROID Bionic 4G LTE smartphone. After countless delays before launch the device has been riddled with little problems and bugs, but at least they’ve been updating frequently. New details on another “soak test” starting have been confirmed and we should be hearing more soon.

Many are assuming this will be Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for the popular Motorola device – and it very well could be. Motorola has mentioned multiple times in the past they are aiming to update to ICS quickly in the beginning months of 2012 so we are hopeful.

We saw some leaked information on an upcoming update back in late January that has yet to land on devices. It’s also possible Verizon and Motorola may have made a few small changes and are getting ready to push that update yet again, but again nothing has been confirmed regarding what the update actually is. The last few updates for the Bionic has really improved the device in the few areas that were needed. Hopefully we’ll be hearing more and we will be sure to update once anything comes in.

After the update to Android 4.0.4 was just leaked for both the Galaxy Nexus and even the Nexus S this past week, we are now hearing rumors regarding the Android 4.0.5 update for both devices. According to a new roadmap leaked by France’s SFR we are now seeing a full list of when they expect updates to hit — and for what devices.

From looking over the list shown above. It appears the update to Android 4.0.5 will possibly be landing in March for both the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus S. The other interesting note here is the fact they’ve also listed the HTC Sensation, Galaxy S II and others all seeing updates to a version of Ice Cream Sandwich around the same time frame.

With Android 4.0.5 we don’t expect any major changes other than Google fixes issues and improving the performance of their new Ice Cream Sandwich. For the others, they’ll finally be receiving official Android 4.0 updates to get them on the latest frozen treat rather than Gingerbread. We’ve seen leaks from HTC in the recent past, and expect updates to start rolling out for their popular devices soon. Could we see them by March? Who knows but I’m sure they are looking to hurry. Most likely Android 4.0.5 will be landing on the GSM Galaxy Nexus first, since the Verizon model just started seeing 4.0.4 this weekend.

Good news folks, not only did the Giants win the Super Bowl but the Verizon Galaxy Nexus (LTE model) has received a little over the air update to Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich this weekend. The update isn’t officially rolling out yet, but has hit multiple devices and we have all the details, download links, and changes that we’ve seen thus far. Check it out below.

As a small reminder this is for the Verizon 4G LTE Galaxy Nexus only for the moment and will not work for the GSM international version. We were all hoping for Android 4.0.3 but this actually brings us to Android 4.0.4 instead. The build is IMM30B and brings with it plenty of changes from what I’m seeing although the update is only 29.2 MB in size.

At the very least they’ve updated the bootloader and the all important radios. This means they’ve made some changes and tweaks to the radio in the device. We are seeing much better service, especially with 4G LTE out of the gate. I now get a solid 3 bars of 4G LTE everywhere in my house, before I was lucky to get one. While we continue to look over the update if you’d like to see what all has been changed check out the unofficial change-log.

Now lets get to the good stuff. For those that don’t want to wait for the update to start rolling out to all users, you can get it now and give it a go. All the details are provided in the XDA links below but I’ll also toss in the ClockWorkMod instructions as that is what was easiest for me.

XDA Thread

Verizon Galaxy Nexus Android 4.0.4 — Download link

ClockWorkMod Instructions:

*Update will break root, but can easily be restored

– Download file from the link above
– Be running stock Android 4.0.2 (ICL53F) (stock radios and all)
– Rename to update.zip if you’d like (not needed for CWM)
– Reboot into CWM Recovery
– Choose “install zip from SD card”
– Find file, flash, reboot, enjoy that 4.0.4 flavored Ice Cream Sandwich

You can root using the original methods or just do what I did — try OTA RootKeeper from the Android Market. It backs up the root, and restores after the OTA. (Worked perfect here)

For those using stock recovery the standard update.zip process did not work for me, if you have better luck feel free to share the details in the comments below. Enjoy!

Motorola has just now started rolling out a major software update improving both performance, as well as security. Update v55.13.25 will completely remove Carrier IQ from the device, and if you don’t exactly know what that is – navigate here. You’ll see about 9 fixes, and of them improved picture clarity delivered from the camera will be most noticeable.

Other than improving overall performance, the Mobile Hotspot application has been updated to help retain a better connection to devices. The AT&T messages app has been revamped as well, offering easier methods for accessing texts stored in your cloud. They’ve gone ahead and renamed a few applications, but it shouldn’t effect anything. They’ve been shortened for easy access in the app tray.

If you’re not too anxious about having the update as soon as possible, then it should be pushed to your device. But those of you looking to get it sooner should navigate through Settings > About Phone > and tap System Updates. During an update, it’s smart to be plugged into an outlet, and also connected to your home wireless network to avoid climbing over your data cap. Hopefully it’s easy and painless, but let us know if any problems occur.

Motorola is all set to roll out another update to the DROID RAZR starting today. Not only that but the same exact update will also be landing on the new DROID RAZR MAXX since they are essentially the same phone — only one has a bigger battery. They both run the same software and will both be receiving an update today as detailed by Verizon. More information and change log available after the break.

While this is not Ice Cream Sandwich it will bring the devices up to Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread. The build number will be 6.12.173 and the update is around 151MB in size, so it might take more than a minute or two to complete. It is nice to see Verizon and Motorola confirming these devices run on the exact same software, this should make development easier for the new MAXX. Provided in the gallery below are both of the change logs for those interested.

From the details below we can see Motorola has introduced tons of stability, performance, and bug fixes. As with most updates that always makes the list so we won’t continue on that. Some of the important bits are the fact that WiFi hotspot issues have been resolved and all users should be able to use the connection now. Verizon has updated a few widgets, VCast, Visual Voicemail and other bloatware items.

Our tipster mentions there are a few improvements to the overall user interface although we see no reports on that here from Verizon. They’ve also resolved some low-signal 4G issues and mention near the bottom that 4G LTE performance should be increased, as well as better batter life. The update should be rolling out any time now so feel free to start checking for updates by going to menu > about phone > check for updates. Shout in the comment section below should you have any issues or notice anything major. Enjoy!

In case you haven’t been following the latest Facebook news they’ve just gone public. Recently signing their Initial Public Offering, authorized by Ernst & Young LLP as having shares of its common stock available to the world. While this is big news it doesn’t really matter for us here in the world of Android. We do have some good news though — Facebook for Android just received an update although only a minor one.

The update to Facebook for Android has just hit the Android Market but judging by the screenshot above they haven’t released a change-log. According to their site and comments on the Facebook for Android page they’ve brought a load of bug fixes with the latest version — although they wont detail what exactly they’ve fixed.

Are you seeing any improvements to the latest version? We are also hearing a few memory management and efficiency issues have been resolved and should keep the application running quick and smoothly for Android users. I don’t know about you guys but ever since the latest huge UI update and overhaul the app just keeps getting worse. We’ll probably see an update tonight or tomorrow to fix whatever they’ve broke today. With all the money Facebook makes, and even more now they’ve gone public you think they could create a better app. Just saying. Hit the link below and grab the shiny new update.

In the recent months the amount of malware in the Android Market has continued to climb, or the reports have at least. When something gets as big and popular as Android you will always have those people looking to cheat, steal, and attack anything they can. Today Google has announced their plans and system to curb all of that. They are calling it the Android Market Bouncer — like that guy in a suit standing by the door.

This isn’t all either. Google already has multiple systems in place, from features and sandboxes built in to prevent these types of problems or information theft, to a system where they can quickly pull the ban hammer out and delete malicious apps from the market — even right off your device if severe enough. I’ve never had a malware problem myself, but some claim it is still an issue for Android.

The new Market Bouncer will work in a few ways. For one it will scan every Android Market application on Google’s cloud services and simulate it running on a device. Then check for malware or suspicious activity. And secondly, the new system will scan each app as they are introduced into the Market upon the approval process. So this will watch and protect us from new apps, and current apps that might get updated or introduce malware or suspicious activity.

Google says this will not affect the submission and approval process and works in just a few seconds — as long as your code and application are clean. What about wrongly flagged apps being removed from the market? That won’t happen either as once an application is flagged Google’s team will manually investigate the application to make sure before wrongly pulling an app or game.

I am really liking this forward thinking and positive approach to malware. What do you guys think? Google ends the security post on a good note and had this to say:

No security approach is foolproof, and added scrutiny can often lead to important improvements. Our systems are getting better at detecting and eliminating malware every day, and we continue to invite the community to work with us to keep Android safe.

The popular online media and music streaming service Rhapsody that is now available on Android, Google TV and many other devices has just launched their latest update for Android. Starting today users can stream in style with a brand new, fully redesigned and imagined Android tablet interface. It’s not just re-sized for a tablet, it has been full on designed specifically for tablets and looks great.

Rhapsody allows customers to find and discover millions of new music tracks, not to mention unlimited music streaming to your Android phone or tablet. They are touting the new tablet layout as more touchable, more engaging, and now with loads of content and new paths to music discovery. With large tiles for easy discovery users can find and enjoy music with ease. This new UI apparently works on Android 3.0 Honeycomb and above tablets, and only for 9″ or larger screens. We’ve yet to try it on a 7″ slate but have a feeling it just might work anyways.

That isn’t all either. The latest update is available right now in the Android Market and they’ve even updated a few fixes for the Kindle Fire — so apparently they support smaller screens in some fashion at least. Other updates include fixes to adding tracks to playlists in bulk, enhanced audio focus at song startup, fixed some sign in screen issues and now supports all Samsung device on Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread.

If Google Music isn’t your cup of tea or you’d like access to millions of artists and music give Rhapsody a try today. Get the new updated app from the link below and enjoy.
