That’s right, the phone that yours truly holds in his heart as one of the all-time greatest Android experiences will be grabbing a bit of the ol’ cookie inside the second quarter of this year. News comes in from over at ComputerWorld where JR Raphael reports he’s been speaking with an official HTC representative who’s tipped him off on the real-deal upgrade. Now we’ve just got to wait for Ice Cream, right?

Last time we spoke of this lovely combination of device and loving guts, it was a ROM which provided many of the better Android 2.3 Gingerbread bits inside – take a peek at that update back here. This Gingerbread update comes alongside news that the Desire Z, aka the Euro version of the G2, is also on track to get the upgrade inside the same timeframe.

Take a look way back at our original T-Mobile G2 review for all the ever-loving love and hate your heart could ever desire on this device in its original form. It’s a doozie, and certainly still a viable option for your nearby purchasing right here, right now, today. Best keyboard yet.

Coming along with the holiday season is the wide range of amazing sales we get, and Android devices have been the focus of sales, as the operating system is expected to grow substantially over the last bit of 2010. Following this trend, T-Mobile is now offering up the HTC G2 for a mere $49.99.

The deal is currently only available online and, if you order before December 20th at 2 PM PT, T-Mobile will throw in free overnight shipping! This is a fantastic deal that will land you with one of the most powerful Android devices, plus it utilizes T-Mobile’s 4G network.

It’s no secret now that Amazon has a thing for discounting things. And when it comes to smartphones, especially the anticipated ones that everyone wants to touch, it’s always a good thing to see that the digital retailer is knocking off the price. This time around, it’s the T-Mobile G2, and it’s getting quite the price drop courtesy of Amazon.

As usual, there’s plenty of other goodies to toss around, too. You’ll have to sign a new, two-year agreement to get the lowered cost (no surprise there), but you’ll get 2 day free shipping to make sure the deal is just that much better for you. The price you get for the new agreement is $79.99, which is quite a big price drop. And, you don’t even need to send in a mail-in rebate, either, which should just be the icing on the cake. Head on over to Amazon to check it out for yourself.

If you’ve been waiting to see HTC show off the T-Mobile G2 in some of their commercials, you don’t have to wait any longer. Just as the other advertisements have been, the point of the ad is not to highlight every single feature of the device, but to narrow it down to a wide variety of them, and show them in action. Even just a glimpse of the calendar, or the messaging app, and the slide-out physical keyboard, all go a long way to showcase the strengths of the device.

There are two of them this time, both of them focusing on the way that we use our phone to take control of every day life. The first one goes as far as to call you the CEO of your own family. Going through the features, like the camera and text messaging. Both commercials show the landscape keyboard in all its glory, adding that bit of physical keyboard goodness that people out there, at least a few of them, still prefer. You can check out both videos below.

It has been another busy week for Android Community, and it’s fans. This week marked the launch of the official R2-D2 Droid, Android’s appeal was measured via a market survey, the much anticipated T-Mobile G2 being launched, and some issues with the G2.

The much hyped R2-D2 Droid launched this week. We went hands on with the limited edition device and went it to detail of it’s array of accessories and custom software features. This has proven to be a great upgrade for any Star Wars loving Verizon user complete with it’s high detail backing, custom Star Wars themed dock and it’s comprehensive pre-installed software including live wallpapers, new boot animation, and theme.

Also this week, we got word via market research firm ChangeWave that
Android’s overall customer appeal has been growing significantly over the last measured 3-month period. With a 7-percent jump in appeal, it is clear that the Android platform is gaining some recognition with the average user, and we can see it making it’s way to the number one mobile platform in the coming years. However, as stated, it wasn’t all good news and growth in numbers – only 65-percent of Android users stated they were “very satisfied in the same survey – compared to iPhone users at 74-percent.

One of the most covered devices this week was, of course, the T-Mobile G2. Being the successor to the very first Android phone it was met with some very high expectations. Most initial impressions were very solid off the bat. However, as with most high profile device launches, the launch was met with some problems. Users have been reporting loose hinges, and up to half of the original storage as they were expecting. No official word has been provided by T-Mobile but users who received a defective unit have not had any problems requesting a replacement.

The standard battery is a 1,300mAh pack which HTC reckon would be good for up to 400 minutes of WCDMA talktime or up to 590 minutes of GSM. Meanwhile standby would be up to 430 hours for WCDMA or up to 430 hours for GSM. The whole thing measures in at 119mm (L) x 60.4mm (W) x 14.16mm (T), and weighs 180g with battery pack.

[Thanks Cooper!]

T-Mobile G1, the world’s first Android™-powered mobile phone, pairing a large 3.7-inch screen with a unique hinge design that opens to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. Current T-Mobile customers will get exclusive access to preorder the G2 starting later this month.

“T-Mobile ignited the spark that set the Android world ablaze two years ago with the launch of the world’s first Android-powered mobile phone, the T-Mobile G1, which remains an important milestone for both T-Mobile and the Android operating system,” said Cole Brodman, chief technology and innovation officer, T-Mobile USA. “Now, with the launch of the T-Mobile G2, we are re-teaming with our partners at Google and HTC to provide T-Mobile customers with another first — the first Android smartphone designed to deliver 4G speeds on our new network.”

“One of the advantages of an open platform is the opportunity for developers to create rich mobile experiences and seamlessly get those experiences into the hands of consumers,” said Andy Rubin, vice president, engineering, Google. “From new services, such as Voice Actions, to mobile applications, developer-led Android innovation is flourishing. On Android Market alone, the number of applications available to consumers has grown from just 50 applications two years ago to more than 80,000 applications today.”

“Two years ago, HTC and T-Mobile worked together to deliver the world’s first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1. From that start, Android has grown to be the leading smartphone platform in the U.S., and one of the most popular globally,” said Peter Chou, chief executive officer, HTC Corporation. “With today’s announcement of the G2, HTC and T-Mobile are once again bringing a breakthrough Android product to market.”

The first smartphone specifically designed to deliver 4G speeds on T-Mobile’s new HSPA+ network, the G2 is optimized for performance to provide customers with blazing fast access to a world of information through websites, applications, videos, file downloads and more. Built on Android 2.2, the G2 offers seven customizable home screen panels, including a dedicated panel with one-click access to your favorite Google applications such as Android Market™, which currently offers more than 80,000 applications.

The T-Mobile G2 delivers a powerful mobile data experience that is tightly integrated with Google Voice™, as well as packed with Google applications such as Voice Actions™ from Google, Google Goggles™ and more. It is one of the first smartphones in the industry to offer the new Voice Actions feature of Google Search™, which allows you to control your phone with your voice for calling contacts and businesses, sending messages, browsing the Web, listening to music and completing common tasks. It is also the first smartphone to offer integrated access to Google Voice™, allowing customers to create a new account using their current mobile number right from the home screen. Google Voice then automatically transcribes voicemails to text so customers can read them like an e-mail or text message from their phone or online. Additional pre-loaded Google services include Google Search, Gmail™, Google Maps™ with Places and Navigation, YouTube™, Google Talk™ and Google Earth™, among others.

Adding fuel to the G2’s speed is its Snapdragon™ MSM7230 mobile processor which combines Qualcomm’s new HSPA+ capabilities and second generation applications processor. The Snapdragon MSM7230 offers an 800 MHz CPU and is optimized to deliver exceptional performance, long battery life and leading edge multimedia and web browsing — with download speeds faster than other solutions currently in the market.

The G2 delivers advanced smartphone features including an HD video camera for recording crystal-clear, high-definition (720p) videos that can be automatically uploaded to your Photobucket account and a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and autofocus. The G2 also offers smartphone essentials such as easy access to personal and work e-mail, including support for Microsoft® Exchange e-mail, contacts and calendar; social networking; and instant messaging. In addition, the G2 features a pre-installed 8GB microSD memory card with support for up to 32 GB, as well as a music player.

Additional features of the G2 include the following:
· Dedicated Quick Keys for one-touch access to your favorite Google shortcuts and applications
Adobe FlashPlayer enabled Web browsing experience
Pinch and zoom functionality for Web browsing and photo gallery
· 4GB internal memory with pre-installed 8GB micro SD card, with support for up to 32 GB of external memory
· Built-in 3.5mm headphone jack, stereo headset and Bluetooth support
· Swype® text input for fast, accurate communication

Availability
The T-Mobile G2 with Google will be available in the U.S. exclusively from T-Mobile, and current T-Mobile customers will have the opportunity to preorder the G2 in limited quantities later this month. Additional availability details will be shared in the coming weeks. Visit http://g2.t-mobile.com to register for updates.

In these recently leaked close-up photos of the G2’s keypad you can see the new shortcut buttons which will come in handy, especially with the ability to assign them as you please. Not only are they “quick and easy to use” but they will save time if linked to applications that are usually placed deep within a phones folders.

This phone is currently expected to be announced on the 15th of September with a presumed launch date of the 29th.

Here is a bit of news that will brighten up some T-Mobile users. Some official pics of the G2. What has us puzzled is that the pics are showing Vanilla Android running on the phone but the site is mentioning HTC Sense. We sure need another Vanilla device, with the way that every Android device is being skinned these days.

The device will feature a 3.7 inch Active Matrix OLED display, 1 GHz <del datetime="2010-08-31T18:29:45+00:00">Snapdragon Processor</del>, landscape slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 5MP camera with autofocus, 3G HSPA+, WiFi + Hotspot capabilities, aGPS, and Bluetooth 2.1 + Enhanced Data Rate. This is looking like a serious contender to replace some Nexus One devices and we will know more in time.

Update: We are hearing that it will not have a Snapdragon but a newer, version of a Qualcomm chipset.

While we’re waiting for T-Mobile and HTC to actually officially announce the device, we’re seeing it pop up everywhere. Not only have we already seen what it looks like, now bold individuals out there can even play with the device’s ROM. The ROM in particular is meant for a test build of the G2, but it is running Android 2.2. And, from what we’ve heard from chatter around the ‘web, we’re hearing that it’s actually stock Android, without any User Interface skinning.

We can also confirm that the device that made its way into the FCC yesterday, with model code PC101000 is indeed the G2. We’re guessing that there’s plenty of people out there already playing around with this, inspecting it for all the gory details and secrets, and that’s a good thing. It hit the Internet earlier today, and with how fast developments happen in the development field, we’re not surprised it’s not already showing up on devices. If that’s even possible at this point. But if you do get some time to play with it, let us know in the comments what you find. You can find the download through the source link below.

Rumors about the HTC Glacier, an exceptionally powerful device featuring T-Mobile’s HSPA+, began a few weeks back, and despite there not being much more information about the device since then, it’s never left our mind. Now, thanks to Engadget, there’s a new AWS-equipped device making its short-term home within the FCC right now. Questions immediately arose from the specifications garnered from that listing. Is this the Glacier, or is it the already well-known G2?

They aren’t sure, but the specifications listed could indeed point to either one of these devices. With a model code number of PC10100, there isn’t any language about a launch title quite yet. The listing does inform us that the handset features WiFi 802.11b/g/n, though. However, most notably, is the inclusion of HSPA+ connectivity. That, along with the fact it’s listed as an AWS 3G device, means this thing’s heading to T-Mobile USA. When that is, or what device this could be is anyone’s guess. So . . . Start guessing!

That means a 3.7-inch WVGA touchscreen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard and an optical trackpad, as well as – we’ve heard – a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. No word from T-Mobile on when exactly the G2 will launch, but they have promised more details in “the coming weeks”.

Update: Thanks to a second-set of images, we can now see the strange hinge mechanism that looks to lift the G2′s display up and over the keyboard, rather than sliding it straight up. No word on tilting, though, like the HTC Touch Pro2.

T-Mobile has launched a new teaser site for their latest Android smartphone, the T-Mobile G2 with Google. The first HSPA+ capable smartphone to their network, details on the G2 are in short supply right now; only a vague outline of the handset has been shown, though we have heard various rumors about different T-Mobile devices in the past.

That includes the T-Mobile G1 Blaze (aka the HTC Vision), a slider-QWERTY handset made by HTC and that would certainly fit in with the carrier’s comments that the G2 is the “successor” of the original G1. However, we’ve also heard talk of the T-Mobile myTouch HD, a large-screen version of the keyboard-free myTouch 3G.

Both are believed to be part of T-Mobile’s Project Emerald. The carrier says it will release more information on the T-Mobiel G2 in the coming weeks, with existing subscribers getting early access to the Android handset.

T-Mobile USA’s Android roadmap has leaked, and it brings with it a number of as-yet unannounced devices that include the Samsung Houdini and the G1 v.2 “Bigfoot”. According to the roadmap, the G2 – aka the HTC Magic, now believed to be called the T-Mobile myTouch 3G – will launch this Summer, a reasonable prediction, priced at $179.

The T-Mobile G1, meanwhile, will reach end-of-life stage at the end of the “back to school” period in early September. It will be replaced by a device listed as the G1 v.2 “Bigfoot”, which the graphic would suggest is a slide-out QWERTY device similar to the Helio Ocean 2.

Meanwhile, a Samsung handset – the Houdini – will reach the carrier. There’s no telling what connection the Houdini has with the Samsung I7500; it could be a different device, or the image could be a mockup created in advance of real I7500 graphics being available (the same could be said for the G1 v.2). Pricing for the latter two handsets has been blanked out, unfortunately.

Launched back at CTIA in February, as a Vodafone exclusive in Europe, HTC had already told Android Community that they would be happy to work with a US carrier. A T-Mobile branded version of the device was then used in a Google demonstration, prematurely confirming the carrier’s intentions.

As for specifications, the Magic has a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, WiFi and GPS. For live photos and our demo videos from CTIA, head over here.

Google took to the stage to unveil GMail’s offline functionality this week, but may have inadvertently announced something else, too: the T-Mobile G2. Vic Gundotra, vice president of engineering, used the new HTC Magic to demonstrate the app, but rather than Vodafone branding the handset he brought out had T-Mobile’s logo.

Currently, the only announced version of the HTC Magic is Vodafone’s exclusive European deal. However HTC told Android Community at MWC this week that their deal with Vodafone only covers country-by-country availability, and that if a US carrier approached them regarding a version of the Magic tailored for US 3G they’d jump at the opportunity.

This new branding certainly seems to suggest that rather than being a question of when a US carrier will pick up the HTC Magic, it’s more a question of when T-Mobile USA will announce their sequel to the G1. For the video of Gundotra’s demonstration, click here.

The first images of the T-Mobile G2 have emerged, showing another HTC-made smartphone that now lacks the full QWERTY keyboard of the T-Mobile G1. The G2 handset keeps the touchscreen and trackball of the G1, but tweaks the front-panel buttons and is, of course, slimmer thanks to the absence of a slide-section.

HTC have also given the T-Mobile G2 a 3.2-megapixel camera, though it’s unclear whether it has autofocus or not, and there appears to still be no flash. The casing has a high-gloss finish, but we’re not sure of measurements as yet.

The original source of the photos reports that the G2′s interface is “very similar” to that of the original G1, and that T-Mobile will be releasing the smartphone come mid-May. No spec details available as yet, though we’d presume an on-screen keyboard – something the G1 lacked as standard – has now been developed. Renders of the new G2 were among the leaked shots of HTC’s 2009 line-up.

This week we learned that only a month before the new Kogan Agora and Agora Pro are set to release the handset underwent a few minor but annoying changes. First the good, the directional pad has been tweaked and appears to be easier to use now. Now for the bad new, the screen was made smaller to give a widescreen appearance. That’s not all that went wrong here, the softkeys also took a hike.

My Maps Editor hit the Android Market so now you can bring your desktop maps wherever you want and even edit them on the fly. With this applications users can create, edit, share, and view personalized maps on your Android-powered handset and synchronize them with the My Maps tab on Google Maps. Just before Jeffrey Sharkey headed to Google he gave us one more little gem called OilCan. This application is basically Greasemonkey on steroids. Users can run scripts to modify many things from the way a web page is laid out to being able to touch and hold an application to uninstall it.

Mocana’s NanoPhone has provided Android users with more security options for those who are finding it hard to trust the built-in browser after recent security issues. Interestingly enough this service does not compromise battery life at all. We also got a few more shots of the new Lenovo “Ophone.” The more we see of this new Android-powered handset, the more we like. We can’t wait to get our hands on this device so we can bring you a full review.

HulloMail has come fourth and brought visual voicemail yet again to the Android. This however is a UK based service so not everyone can try it out unfortunately. The top ten downloaded applications for Android have been announced and it took us by surprise that the number one spot was filled by a game. It was an easy guess just which game made the spot, the Namco classic Pac-Man has been a number one classic for years.

There is a new update for Android in the works and it goes by the name “cupcake”. Included in this update are plenty of features that you would be crazy not to love. The most notable change in this update is video recording! The T-Mobile G1 maintenance guide found its way to the internet this week providing anyone with teardown, troubleshooting and repair tutorials. There are going to be plenty of voided warranties after this move. T-Mobile has also chosen to drop the $18 upgrade fee for the holidays; there is no word just how long this promotion will last.

Android Community is giving away 6 Plantronics Discovery 925 Bluetooth Headsets for the holidays this season. All you have to do is register and create a post telling us what is on your Christmas list. Couldn’t be simpler. Huawei has announced that they will release Android-powered handset in 2009. There is still not many details on this handset, but we are certainly glad to hear that another Android-powered handset is in the works.

Android has gotten the first turn-by-turn application this week, the really catcher though is the price. With the help of in application ads, AndNav2 will remain free to all users. This certainly beats out the turn-by-turn subscription costs of most services. Samsung is also set to release a touchscreen Android-powered handset for release in late 2009. Lets hope this touchscreen does not resemble the others, which are milky and hard to see in the sun.

CellphoneSignal fabricated a story about the new T-Mobile G2 coming in late January 2009. Of course the specs seemed a little off including video calling features. This turned out to be false as we suspected. Sorry for any confusion there might have been. There are more reliable rumors, but even then theyare just rumors.

As more and more tips come in regarding the T-Mobile G2 it gets harder and harder to sift through and decipher what is true and what is not. So all information as of new should be taken as nothing more than a rumor. Here is what a tipster told The Boy Genius Report.

All of the specs that CellphoneSignal reported are very wrong and the launch date could not be more off. The device is a fully touch handset and as much as we would like, does not have a physical full QWERTY keyboard. Yes there is a trackball at the bottom; they simply could not let it go. The launch of the device has been delayed from late February to April due to uncontrollable software issues.

The T-Mobile G2 will actually be launched on another global carrier with a different name, as T-Mobile G1, G2 and G3 are trademarks of T-mobile. The tipster did not see the G3, yes there apparently is a G3 and it is reportedly coming not long after the G2. We hate to drown you with more rumors, but we felt that we should give you the most reliable rumor out there right now.
