Right about the time that HP ran its now legendary TouchPad fire sale, a few lucky customers received TouchPads inexplicably running Android. Apparently the PC manufacturer had been testing Gingerbread builds on its tablet (which runs Palm’s WebOS natively). As a show of solidarity to the development community, HP has now released the source code for its own internal version of the Android kernel to the CyanogenMod team. CyanogenMod maintains the most popular TouchPad Android port, CyanogenMod 7 Gingerbread, as well as the new CM9 Ice Cream Sandwich. You can read all the juicy details over at RootzWiki.

Giving away the kernel source is in addition to moving the entire WebOS software platform to an open source model, granting HP some very real cred with aftermarket developers and modders. Though the supply of retail TouchPads is now effectively zero, it’s still one of the most popular tablets out there for bargain hunters and techies. While not a supertablet by any means (it’s roughly the equal of the original iPad as far as specs go) it makes a fine start for Android enthusiasts looking to try out the tablet form factor.

What can the CyanogenMod team do with HP’s help? For starters, they’ll probably use the kernel to iron out some of the most consistent problems in their custom Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich builds, including HD video and camera issues. Past that, they should be able to make changes to CPU and memory handling for a smoother and more stable experience – not that the ROMs are particularly bad now. The Gingerbread ROM is currently at the Alpha 3.5 stage, while the ICS ROM is still on Alpha .6. Adventurous modders can flash the ROMs without affecting their current WebOS partitions.

More source code news today — and no we don’t mean the Jake Gyllenhaal movie either. Today Samsung has just pushed the kernel source code out for their new Samsung Galaxy Note with AT&T LTE. The code was released some time ago but this new release is specific to the AT&T 4G LTE model that was announced last month.

The AT&T version of the Note wont be available until February 19th, and pre-sales start on the 5th but that hasn’t stopped Samsung as the code is readily available today, right now at the source links below. Now those awesome folks at XDA or RootzWiki can get started on creating even better ROMs, mods, hacks, and overclock the beast. Don’t expect too much until the device starts landing in developers hands, but this is a good start.

Available today at the Samsung Open Source Release Center, but there appears to be three different versions available to download that are basically the same. If you want to dig around inside the code for yourself or are eager to start developing for the 5.3″ Note hit the link below and have some fun.

HTC is at it again today and have released the source code for many of their current and recently updates smartphones. It’s nice to see that HTC is continuing to honor the GLP terms by offering these releases — although I’m sure many wish they’d offer them a little faster. The Sensation has been around for a while but at least we finally have access to the code now.

From the image above you can see they’ve released the code for many devices including the Sensation, Sensation XL, Desire HD, Desire S (Gingerbread builds), Rhyme, and a few others. Me being a proud owner of a Sensation I’m expecting a few awesome updates coming shortly from kernel builders and hackers alike.

As usual, average people don’t have much use or need for these sorts of things but for all the Android enthusiasts, geeks, and kernel builders now is the time to start cranking out the good stuff. We should be seeing smoother and better performance from many custom ROM’s once the source code tweaks make their way into custom builds and kernels.

Fun stuff — if you’re in need of any of the above said code head to HTCdev.com to get started.

Google gets a lot of praise for bringing open source to the masses with Android, and a lot of flack for some of its more closed-off activities. On a technical level the company complies with the fundamental principles of open source software, but not always in the way that FOSS proponents would like. A perfect example is Android 3.0 Honeycomb, which never saw an open source release until version 4 was already available. These tendencies and more technical details led VisionMobile to rank it the “most closed” open source OS among a field of the most popular examples.

In a series of metrics, Google’s Android scored just 23% “open”, comparing poorly to the likes of Linux, Symbian and Meego. The running wasn’t limited to operating systems – Mozilla’s various open source tools, the Webkit browser framework and the QT user interface toolkit were also included. VisionMobile based their ratings on a variety of factors, such as the licenses used, the strictness by which the community is enforced, and the level of access that developers are given to the development process. For a more technical breakdown, head over to the source link above.

There’s no denying that Google keeps a pretty tight lid on Android, at least until the source code is released. In the case of the G1, original DROID, Nexus One, XOOM, Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus, only Google’s software engineers and its hardware partners had access to the software until well after a flagship device was released. On the other hand, Google’s aggressive promotion of Android has allowed it to become one of the most widely-used pieces of open source software in history, giving manufacturers, developers and tinkerers a complete and free ecosystem – eventually. VisionMobile concludes that Google’s promotional machine is a double-edged sword for Android, broadening its horizons while keeping its core interest well within the commercial spectrum.

Last week the official ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime product page went live from ASUS and while we already know plenty about this quad-core packing tablet it was good to finally see everything official. Apparently the same product page over in Germany had the entire kernel source code nicely listed right on the download page last night, but has since been taken down.

While we are still digging for information, taking a look at the US product page we have no such luck and only some USB drivers and a few other unimportant things were available for download. According to our tipster from androidapptests.com the Transformer Prime kernel source code was up and available for download and they quickly snatched it up.

Shown in the screenshot above you can see the kernel (listed around 90MB) the product manuals and FAQ PDF’s as well as some sort of PC Suite application most likely for the keyboard dock. Looking at the date they were just uploaded yesterday so things are looking very new, and pretty close to being ready if you ask me — I just want it already! Apparently the kernel was downloaded before being removed and is available at the source link listed above, but we wont comment further as we are still looking for more information.

The Transformer Prime is set to launch in December so we should start hearing details and seeing more any day now. NVIDIA gave us an awesome demo video showing the Transformer Prime running Android 4.0 ICS earlier this week, and Gamestop has it listed for shipping December 9th. Either way I can’t wait to get my hands on this NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core powered tablet as soon as possible.

— Thanks Klaus!

The fancy new Transformer Prime gets all the attention at the moment, and rightly so. But if you’re hanging on to your original Asus Eee Pad Transformer, or picking up a cheap one in a sweet Black Friday deal, you might want to have a look at this. The Transformer is joining the swelling ranks of phones and tablets with an early version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, made possible by the recently released open-source code.

This build of Android is very early indeed, currently lacking audio and being generally slow and buggy. But most of the other important hardware works, including WiFi and Bluetooth, making a full demonstration possible. YouTube user BumbleDroid shares credit for the work between himself, the CyanogenMod and AndroidRoot.mobi teams and a few other developers.

Watch it in action below:

Asus has promised an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for the original Transformer, in addition the the quick update for the forthcoming Transformer Prime. Nvidia even showed the new software running on the Tegra 3 hardware in a video last week. But we all know it can take a while for manufacturers to get the lead out, and community-built ROMs have their own advantages. The build should be significantly improved in the coming weeks.

Android hackers and RAZR fans alike can rejoice today as Motorola has just released the source code for their new and popular DROID RAZR. It was announced back in October and became available earlier this month and now all the developers have full access to the code if needed.

As you can see in our image above the phone is still a little locked down, as usual with Motorola the bootloader is locked down quite tight. However, the RAZR was rooted very quickly after being launched and details for root are available here. Some modders might be worried with a non-removable battery but we found out it actually does come out — it just takes some effort.

The source code will allow the full development and modding to really begin, for those that aren’t familiar and hopefully we’ll be seeing some progress for this amazingly thin and sleek phone soon. Covered in Kevlar now we just need some Ice Cream Sandwich and it’d be perfect. The DROID Bionic has some CM7 ports under way but I have a feeling most of the development community will be aiming for Android 4.0 ICS for the RAZR. We’ll be sure to update once some ROM’s start becoming available. Don’t forget to check out our full DROID RAZR review while you’re here.

The HTC HD2 has long been a favorite of high-end hardware enthusiasts and modders. Though it launched with Windows Mobile 6.5 nearly two years ago, its hack-friendly architecture lets it see a release of pretty much every new Android operating system. Count the newest among the list: an intrepid modder has shoehorned Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich onto the aging hardware. The ROM comes from “tytung“, who’s naturally a denizen of XDA-Developers.

Note that this build of Ice Cream Sandwich comes straight from the source code, unlike some slightly earlier builds based on the Android SDK.Most of the features are working, albeit somewhat sluggishly, with the exclusion of the camera, USB storage and hardware acceleration. There’s also some user-patchable problems with the Android Market, call quality and root access. You can check out the ROM in action below:

It goes without saying t5hat this modification isn’t for the faint of heart. But if you’ve already got Android running on your HD2, it’s probably not that much of a stretch. The HD2 joins the Nexus S, Galaxy S II and Optimus 3D among the proud ranks of Ice Cream Sandwich home-made ROMs, with many more sure to pop up in the upcoming weeks and months. Be sure and check out our hands-on of Ice Cream Sandwich for a more official look.

We told you that it would only be a few days after the source code dropped that Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs would begin to come out. Lo and behold, some extremely sleepy custom ROM builders have already got Android 4.0 running on retail hardware. The first two devices to see early ports are the Samsung Galaxy S II and the LG Optimus 3D.

Now, SGSII and Optimus 3D owners, don’t rush to install these just yet. They’re both extremely early builds, and on the Galaxy S II version not even the WiFi is working yet. Moreover, the separate YouTube users haven’t posted links or instructions – not that you’d want to use something so unfinished as a reliable ROM anyway. Rest assured these and other Android modders are hard at work on just about every active and popular device, and even a few that aren’t. You can check out the two phones in action below:

So, when can you get a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich? If you’re in Europe and you’ve got several hundred dollars worth of local currency, you can go and buy a Galaxy Nexus now. Here in the U.S. they’re still thin on the ground, with one very notable exception. Verizon still hasn’t given an official date for the Galaxy Nexus release date, because <del>they hate you and don’t want your money</del> they just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Here’s hoping that it sees the light of day in the next week or two. On the software side, more stable versions for existig phones will be coming out of the mod community soon, with super-ROMs like CyanogenMod likely coming in the spring.

We knew the minute that the Ice Cream Sandwich source code was released, thousands of Android devs were hard at work on ROMs, ports and other projects. It looks like YouTube user pfefferzlinaro gets to claim “first” on an ICS dev build: he’s released a video of Ice Cream Sandwich running from source on a PandaBoard, output to a monitor or small television. The build is extremely early and far from functional but it is, well, first.

A PandaBoard is an ARM system-on-a-chip computer that shares a lot of hardware components with common Android phones and tablets. It’s designed to be a developer test tool – essentially, it allows devs to test their Linux or Android apps (or in this case, operating systems) before moving on to more varied hardware. The developer in question has put together a quick and dirty version of Ice Cream Sandwich just to prove that is can be done. There’s still some interesting things to be seen here, mostly in that the horizontal resolution gives us the first good look at what ICS will be like on a tablet.

Check out the video for yourself below:

You can expect more useful versions of ICS to start appearing within the next few days and weeks. It’s a good bet that the Nexus S and Nexus One will see some very quick ports, with other popular devices to follow. That said, it’ll be a few weeks before any of these ports start approaching the level of daily drivers, so keep a Nandroid backup handy if you’re the tinkering type.

CyanogenMod is without a doubt the most popular and prolific of the myriad custom Android ROMs, and now that the Ice Cream Sandwich source code is available, the team is hard at work on an Android 4.0 version. Cyanogen and his teammates only work with AOSP code, so they haven’t bothered with the various SDK ports that have popped up recently. Steve “Cyanogen” Kondik confirmed that work has begun in his Twitter feed.

A word on nomenclature: CyanogenMod 9 will be the official name for the Ice Cream Sandwich version, skipping straight from the Gingerbread build in CyanogenMod 7. The name “CyanogenMod 8″ is reserved for a Honeycomb version. However, it’s unlikely that Honeycomb will ever see an official CyanogenMod release, even though the source code has finally been included with the ICS code. There’s just no reason not to continue to ICS, since it’s designed to work with both tablets and smartphones.

Development on the latest Gingerbread build, CyanogenMod 7.2, will continue concurrently while CyanogenMod 9 is being developed. The CyanogenMod team is famously against deadlines, but you can expect early builds within the next few weeks and alphas withing three months at the most. If that seems like a long time, remember that most manufacturer updates will take at least that long – if you’re lucky. In the meantime, quicker (and less stable) ICS builds should begin popping up for current phones any day now.

As a surprise early gift for Android developers everywhere, Google has posted the official Ice Cream Sandwich source code in the Android AOSP directory. Eager developers can download it right now and get cracking on ROMs and apps. The release is weeks before anyone expected the full source code to be available.

Earlier today Notion Ink’s CEO said that the full ICS source code would be made available on November 17th, the same day that the Android 4.0-sporting Galaxy Nexus is scheduled to be released in Europe. Before that, the best that we could get out of Google was “A few weeks” after the Galaxy Nexus launch. There’s still no word on when Verizon, the first US carrier slated to receive the Galaxy Nexus, will be launching the phone itself.

The Android Open Source Project code is an important step in Android adoption: full access to the open source code will allow manufacturers to upgrade their current devices to Ice Cream Sandwich. It also means that manufacturers, even those who opt not to use Google’s official services, can start making new phones and tablets that run the new software at launch. Modders like the CyanogenMod team will begin creating brand-new ICS ROMs soon.

Well folks, time to let the good times roll and the custom ROMs flow. HTC has recently released the full kernel source code for the HTC Thunderbolt, although this isn’t for Froyo, no, this is for the recently released Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Now all of the hackers and tinkerers that make our custom ROM’s can get to work on the Gingerbread aspects of things. Good news for Thunderbolt users indeed.

Shown in the image below the source has finally been released and is available for download, coming in at just 89MB it shouldn’t take too long and we can expect developers are already knee deep in code. While this isn’t a big deal for the average consumer, all the users that make custom ROM’s or overclocking kernels and all those other things we love to mess with on Android, the source code is a big part of that. HTC hasn’t been the fastest to release in the recent past but we are glad to see this Gingerbread build arrive so quickly after the OTA (although the OTA did take forever.)

If tweaking and enjoying Gingerbread isn’t your thing now the cold and tasty Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is here there is also a 4.0 ICS SDK port for the Thunderbolt and if you’d like to give that a try more details are available here. Give all those developers and ROM makers a few days to sift through the kernel source code and I’m sure we’ll be seeing plenty of good things come out of XDA and RootzWiki soon be ready for some flashing.

Samsung is at it again, dropping the kernel source code for more devices and today they’ve added the Galaxy Note to the list. This awesome device announced back at IFA is a 5.3″ Super AMOLED packing smartphone — or tablet, or whatever you want to call it. While not yet available in the U.S. and may never will be, Samsung has already released the source code for said device.

The phone truly is a beast, in size and specs and we were able to get our share of hands-on time with the device. The 5.3″ slate is closer to a tablet than a phone and is aimed for note takers and users on the go. With a build in stylus it has full stylus support for note taking, doodling pictures and more. Powered by a 1.4 GHz dual-core processor and rocking an impressive Super AMOLED HD display at 1280 x 800 all on a 5.3″ screen this slate really is quite large.

For now the device is currently set to only be available at a few locations overseas and in the UK but there are still plenty of developers and modders that have been patiently waiting for the dirty source codes. Today Samsung has released the full source code so now developers and tinkerers alike can dig in and see what they find and start tweaking things as they see fit. Samsung is expecting the development community to really help make the larger than life Galaxy Note successful by building some awesome applications for it and its stylus. We’ll see as time goes on whether or not it comes to the US, I’m still hopeful.

ROM cookers, get your kitchens ready. Motorola has just released the source code for the LTE-sporting DROID BIONIC, and the Android masses are waiting on their custom software. We can rebuild it. We have the code. Make it, and fame and adulation on countless Android forums are yours for the taking. Get going!

The code should be welcome for a lot of users, since the DROID BIONIC has seen more than its fair share of glitches and errors having to do with Motorola and Verizon’s Android customizations. The BIONIC is currently running a little behind the Gingerbread pack as well, so perhaps the modders out there can give it a boost to the latest version. For those of you who don’t regularly go elbow-deep into the more technical side of the operating system, expect initial custom ROMS within a week or so and stable releases a few weeks after that.

Sadly, the release of the code does not mean that Motorola will extend the same courtesy for its proprietary bootloader or kernel. This means that the software modifications are going to be skin-deep for the foreseeable future. For example, CyanogenMod, which uses a customized version of the AOSP Android kernel, won’t be coming any time soon. This is a problem that’s plagued Motorola handsets ever since the Droid X and Droid 2, but maybe their new benefactors at Google can make them see the light on upcoming devices like the DROID RAZR.

Samsung has been doing all of the developers and Android tinkerers a solid lately and have been releasing the source code for many popular devices, often times before they even launch. They’ve now released said codes for the Stratosphere, Transfix, Galaxy Y Pro and more all before they’ve even been officially launched. Source codes and kernels are essential for developers to tweak and customize Android and build kernels and all those other things we all love about Android.

They’ve not only released the codes for low-range phones, the same thing has happened for the Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch and the AT&T SGSII although we are still waiting for the T-Mobile versions code to be released. With the way things have been going I see that dropping any day now. All the details and downloads can be found at the Samsung Open Source Center, don’t we wish everyone else was this quick?

Samsung Stratosphere kernel source
Samsung Transfix kernel source
Samsung Galaxy Y Pro kernel source

The Transfix and Stratosphere are both available now and while they might not be the best smartphones around, now developers can get them cracked open and start tweaking them for max performance or whatever else they have in mind. The links provided above for each respective device will take you to the kernel source download for said device. Enjoy!

Let the hacking, modding and overclocking begin once this device is finally able to be purchased. Samsung has already released the kernel source code for the AT&T version of the Galaxy S II, even though the phone isn’t even out yet. We sure wish other companies would do the same (hint HTC). While Samsung released the code for the Epic 4G Touch on launch day, they’ve gone a step further here and it’s already available before the phone itself.

Now developers and users can download the source code and tweak, modify and change whatever their hearts desire. The Galaxy S II already is a stellar performing device but crank it up to 1.8 GHz and it will truly fly. Everything is available over at the Samsung open source center.

To make things even easier we’ll take it one step further and for access to the AT&T SGSII source code we’ve found it for you so just head over and download it by clicking here. This should make things readily available so when the phone launches next week developers will already have a head start. For those that may have missed it the AT&T Galaxy S II will be available October 2nd, and for just $199.

If you’ve been debating the purchase of the AT&T variant here is our hands-on coverage as well as another video showing the Galaxy S II’s featured apps and more.

The huge Facebook campaign going after HTC has continued to pay off as of late, not only are we getting unlocked bootloaders come August or September, but a few weeks ago they released the source code to many popular devices. It appears they now have released even more today and they are some of their most popular phones.

While having the source code is not extremely important for the developer community and custom rom/kernel builders it makes the entire process much easier and speeds progress and development along with said devices. HTC just released the kernel source codes for not only the highly popular EVO 4G (after waiting forever) but also the new EVO 3D, Sensation 4G and even the Facebook HTC Status. They didn’t forget about both Incredibles either.

This is great news for developers and we should be seeing some progress on all these devices now the community has access to this information. This also comes with great timing as we might be getting unlocked bootloaders for the Sensation and EVO 3D today thanks to the amazing developers we have in the android world.

For all the downloads and kernel codes you need they are all available here.

Lately HTC has been getting some more grief from the development and Facebook communities and another campaign was recently launched demanding they release the source code for many of their popular devices. The main ones being asked for in this online stampede over on Facebook were for newer devices like the EVO 3D or the Sensation and even the EVO 4G just to name a few but that didn’t happen. Instead HTC released the source code for a few other not as popular devices to at least show progress.

They have released a lot of things over at the HTC Developer Center, but source codes for the big devices are still hard to come by. The original EVO 4G is one of those still yet to be released. EVO 4G updates are listed, but not kernel source codes. Open GPL requirements say they need to release these but most OEM’s are very slow to actually do it.

This doesn’t mean much for the average user, but for kernel and ROM builders this is exactly what they need. It’s like their TrueBlood, once they have it they are good to go. Having the kernel source code allows developers to enhance performance, build great overclocking kernels, ROMs and more. It can also help them port something like the HTC Flyer ROM over to other tablets like the G-Tablet or even a NOOKcolor.

Most of our HTC bootloaders are still locked but at least HTC is starting to release more of the kernel source codes. Lets just hope they don’t take as long on their recent devices as they have on the EVO 4G because its devs are still waiting on HTC regarding that. For all the details and the downloads head over to the source link below.

In their first quarter shareholder announcement, chip maker Intel announced that they would be embracing the Bot by porting the Honeycomb Android source code. The move was welcomed by Wall Street as shares of Intel rose 7.8% on the news. Intel plans to offer chips for Android based tablets within the next few months. There’s also plans for smartphones running on with Intel inside.

“We’ve received the Android code – the Honeycomb version of Android source code – from Google, and we’re actively doing the port on that,” Intel’s chief executive Paul Otellini said.

The news not only boosted the share price on Intel stock, but it also served to quash rumors that lean days were ahead for the chip manufacturer since more and more users are opting for mobile smartphones and tablets than PC purchases. By jumping into the Android pool with both feet, Intel is essentially saying “if you can’t beat em, join em.” It also gives Android device manufacturers options and competition always means faster chips sooner and lower prices. In fact, Otellini said at the announcement that Intel based smartphones were on the horizon and should be in the market within a year.

Intel shares for the first quarter rose by 29 percent to $3.16 billion. So the outlook is rosy for the chip maker who is diversifying where the public is going. But could it also mean Android may come to Intel desktops and notebooks? That would certainly be something to watch out for.
