Variety is the spice of life, and in the mobile world this tenet is demonstrated best with Android hardware. When it comes to variety, Android phones and tablets beat all comers. So it was with some anticipation that I received Sony's Tablet P, a singular device that sets out to put an impressively-sized screen in a small body that's made possible by a folding hinged design, achieving more portability than anything in its class. But a novel idea doesn't necessarily make a good product, so I put it through Android Community's regular review regimen. Does the Tablet P stack up to the competition? Read on to find out.

Sony Tablet S and Tablet P ICS updates coming in April for Japan

Trying out your shiny new Tablet P on AT&T, only to wish it had an operating system that wasn't nearing a year out of date? Then you're in luck: Sony has announced that it'll be pushing out the Ice Cream Sandwich update to both the Tablet S and Tablet P in April, making good on its earlier promise. The bad news is that it's only confirmed for Japan at the moment; those with WiFi-only Tablet S machines in the US and elsewhere will have to wait an indeterminate amount of time to get their hands on the update.

Wrapping up the last day of the work week, here are today's top stories. The world had thought the international version of the Samsung Galaxy S II would receive Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) tomorrow, March 10th. It turns out that their statement was faulty, and that they will let customers know when they plan on rolling out the update. So as of now, owners of the original GSII are going to have to wait.

Sony Tablet P rooted just after AT&T release

Well that didn't take long. Just five days after Sony's unique Tablet P landed on American shores for the first time courtesy of AT&T, someone's given it the Android Rite of Passage and rooted it. In a bit of a departure from the norm, it's not coming from XDA or RootzWiki, but from a little site called Pocketables and a couple of users named "condi" and "BluechipJ'. It's pretty simple as far as Android root processes go: connect via ADB, run a little custom code and you're good to go.

AT&T bundles Sony Tablet P and XPERIA Play for $299

Do you like Android handsets and tablets? Got a thing for non-standard form factors? Want to sign a new contract with AT&T? Then you're a member of an extremely small niche, one that's coincidentally served by AT&T's latest Android phone/tablet bundle. Sony's brand-new Tablet P and the somewhat less than new Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play get the treatment this time: you can pick up both on a pair of new contracts for just $299.99. That's a savings of about a hundred dollars, were you to buy them separately: the Tablet P is $399 and the XPERIA Play is just 99 cents.

After months of waiting and no small amount of whining from yours truly, Sony has finally seen fit to grace the United States with the presence of its oddball folding tablet, the Tablet P. For better or worse it's only available on AT&T's wireless network. Sony fans and those looking for a little something different have been waiting a long time for the Tablet P. Does the unique folding screen mechanism make for a better tablet, or yet another Android oddity? Let's find out.

We've been bemoaning the lack of availability of the Sony Tablet P, a unique clamshell Android tablet, ever since it launched in Japan and failed to materialize here in the US. It looks like the long wait is finally over: the Sony Tablet P will come to AT&T on Sunday, March 4th, four months after it hit the market elsewhere. The tablet will cost $399.99 - not bad, but of course you'll also need to sign up for a new two-year contract or renew your current one. Unlike most of the new tablets headed to MWC, the Tablet P will only get access to HSPA+ "4G", not the new LTE network.

Sony announced late last that its first two Android tablets, the mostly conventional S and the hinged split-screen P, would be getting an official Ice Cream Sandwich update. Of course, a promise without a timeframe rings somewhat hollow. TechRadar reports that Sony announced that both models will be updated "this spring", speaking to the press at a London event. The company spokesman also let loose about some exciting new functionality, including Microsoft Office and PlayStation 3 controller compatibility.

Sony has already confirmed its plans to bring Android 4.0 to each and every Xperia phone released in 2011, and now its only two entries into the tablet market are getting a similar treatment. The manufacturer confirms that Ice Cream Sandwich will see its way to the 9.4-inch Tablet S and the dual-screen Tablet P. The announcement came via press release today.

Sony Tablet P taken apart by FCC

The Sony Tablet P dual-screen tablet recently received an official FCC tear down - right on schedule before it makes its way over to the US. I've never seen the insides of a dual-screen tablet, but then again there aren't that many to go by. From the photos included in the below gallery, it's obvious the wireless components are laid out in the lower clamshell.
