Sony Ericsson W8 Walkman Phone with Android

Sony today has quietly, and without much of any press, or Walkman lovers of any sort knowing, have announced the Sony Ericsson W8 Walkman Phone. Oh and did I mention that it runs Android. Although it is sadly only Android 2.1 Eclair. I can see this phone being perfect for some people, but having last generation hardware, and software I just don't understand why, but for those Walkman lovers you can get it soon.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA update released: Multitouch for X10, ANT+ for X8

Sony Ericsson has begun pushing out its promised update for the XPERIA X10 and XPERIA X8, adding pinch-zoom multitouch to the larger handset and enabling ANT+ support for the smaller. The long-awaited multitouch addition to the X10 will work in both the browser and Google Maps; Sony Ericsson is hoping feature tweaks like these will salve the pain of never getting an Android OS update beyond 2.1. There's also some on-device video editing support and more languages; the full list of changes is below. The X10 and X8 update can be installed manually, via USB, or Sony Ericsson say that most markets will have an OTA option as well.

Addition of some bi-directional languages (Arabic, Farsi, Thai and Hebrew) – All products.
Pinch/zoom touch for mobile Internet and Google Maps. – Only Xperia X10.
Moxier in an updated version (2.7.13) that includes a great overview widget for e-mail, calendar and tasks.
Moxier e-mail shown in Timescape.
Possibilities of trimming videos in the phone.
Videos are transcoded to fit into MMS-messages even if they were recorded in high quality.
Minor changes to Mediascape with access to “Now Playing” in the top right corner.

Sony Ericsson Happiness app promises perks while you wait for 2.1

Sony Ericsson don't seem to be able to get their Android 2.x update for the XPERIA range out of the door, but they're hoping a little bribery will go a long way in endearing users to them. Sony Ericsson "Happiness" is a free download in the Android Market available for all XPERIA users, and offers "free entertainment content such as music and videos, as well as exclusive discounts across leading brands, high street retailers, restaurants and bars." That includes Champion's League tickets, discounts on food and footwear, and other deals, at least for UK users. Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 now shipping

Sony Ericsson has confirmed that the XPERIA X8 has begun shipping, the company's latest Android smartphone and what's tipped to be the cheapest model in the company's line-up. The XPERIA X8 slots in-between the X10 and the X10 mini in terms of screen size, with a 3.2-inch panel, but has a 3.2-megapixel fixed-focus camera.

We grabbed some hands-on time with the X8 recently, and you can't really miss the family resemblance. It's a reasonably sturdy device, if slightly uninspired in its design, but its biggest flaw is Android 1.6. While Sony Ericsson has said it plans to update the XPERIA X8 to Android 2.1, it still doesn't have a public timescale for that taking place.

Sony Ericsson managed to unveil the Xperia X8 back in June, but the most surprising announcement back then was the fact that it would actually be released in a normal time frame, unlike its bigger cousin, the X10. And while we do hope that SE can manage to officially release the device some time in the third quarter of this year, like they iniitally planned, just because it's making the rounds in the FCC right now doesn't mean they'll make that window.

Sony Ericsson have officially taken the wraps off of the new XPERIA X8, after the Android-based smartphone was spotted ahead of time as the "Shakira". The XPERIA X8 has a 3-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen and runs Android 1.6 Donut with the distinctive Sony Ericsson UI; it also gets a 3.2-megapixel camera and the Timescape and Mediascape apps. There's also UMTS (in either 900/2100 or 800/1900/2100 flavors) along with quadband GSM/EDGE, WiFi and A-GPS. Running the show is a 600MHz processor with a microSD card slot. It has all the usual Google Android apps, and will arrive in Q3 2010 in a choice of colors: White, Dark Blue/ White, Aqua Blue/ White, Pink/ White, or Silver/ White. Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 revealed

Sony Ericsson's diminutive "Shakira" Android smartphone has apparently been christened the XPERIA X8, with the phone slotting in-between the XPERIA X10 and the X10 mini in terms of size. According to the Unofficial SE Blog's newly unearthed images, the XPERIA X8 will lack the LED flash of its siblings, and have the same UI as the X10 mini complete with corner-situated shortcut controls. However full specifications are currently unknown. There's obviously 3G and Sony Ericsson's "Timescape" UI, but otherwise we're left guessing. Still, if the X10 mini looks simply too small for you - and with a 2.55-inch display we don't blame you - then the X8 may fill the niche. [gallery]
