Sony announces Ice Cream Sandwich delays – no OTA updates either

Sony's been uncharacteristically forthcoming when it comes to their plans on updating phones to Ice Cream Sandwich. The manufacturer committed to updating all of its 2011 Xperia phones to Android 4.0, a promise it's already starting to make good on with ICS betas for The Xperia Play and others. Unfortunately, it looks like users will have to wait a little longer than they'd previously thought. Sony said in December that the first updated phones would be the Xperia Arc S , Neo V and Ray would be getting official updates in March, but they've bumped them back to mid-April. No word on the rest of the Xperia line, previously said to be updated in April or May.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc HD in the works with 720p display
Sony Ericsson is planning what we are hearing will be called the Xperia Arc HD with a brilliant 1280 x 720p display using their BRAVIA engine. Now we should probably just call them SONY since they bought out Ericsson's half recently. So, Sony is prepping a new 720p smartphone to add to their lineup. We've heard rumors of the Nozomi packing a 720p screen and possibly a 1.5 GHz dual-core, could this be the same phone?

Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo, Play, and Arc Soon to get Official CyanogenMod
CyanogenMod, everybody's (or at least my) favorite custom ROM is in line to make its way to several of Sony Ericsson's latest devices. Earlier this year SE made developers overjoyed when it announced plans to help owners of its latest phones unlock their bootloaders at the cost of official updates and warranties. That freedom is about to pay off as code for bringing CM 7.1 to the Xperia Neo, Play, and Arc is currently awaiting official approval.

XPERIA Play and Arc Android/Facebook update out for Vodafone handsets
Sony Ericsson's Android 2.3.3 update for the XPERIA Play and XPERIA Arc has been released for Vodafone UK's versions of the two smartphones. The updates bring the two handsets up to speed with Google's latest version of the OS, as well as adding in Facebook Inside XPERIA integration as on the mini and mini pro. Rather than an OTA update, the new firmware is delivered using a USB connection to your computer and the Sony Ericsson Update Service app. Vodafone says it will also improve voice quality, device stability, email setup and Exchange account performance, and introduce various bugfixes and security enhancements. Full instructions for the Play are here and for the Arc are here. Let us know how you get on!

XPERIA Play and Arc Android 2.3.3 update released with Facebook Inside [Video]
Sony Ericsson has begun pushing out its Android 2.3.3 update the the XPERIA Arc and XPERIA Play. The update includes the new Facebook Inside XPERIA functionality which Sony Ericsson debuted on the XPERIA min and mini pro. That inserts deeper Facebook integration through the various preloaded apps, including the ability to "Like" the track you're currently listening to in the media player, share updates more quickly, and pull Facebook events down into the phone's calendar. There's also various other bugfixes and the like, along with Google's own minor improvements in 2.3.3. It's rolling out progressively across markets - no word on which is first at this stage - so don't be surprised if the update doesn't show up on your phone quite yet. Sony Ericsson has also confirmed that the Gingerbread update for the XPERIA X10 will include Facebook Inside XPERIA too.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, and Arc getting Android 2.3.3 next week, Facebook included
From the looks of things the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and Xperia Arc are both set to be receiving the latest and greatest in Android and that is 2.3.3. They mention not only will many bug fixes be included, but what they are calling "Facebook inside Xperia" will be included as well. We are not sure what markets that have the Xperia Play will be getting the update, or if all will be getting it. The Xperia Play was originally considered Google's Gingerbread HERO phone, but the Nexus S is what got first dibs on Gingerbread instead.

Xperia Arc used to remotely drive a car
Remember the scene in Tomorrow Never Dies where James Bond is being chased by the bad guys and he drives his rental car remotely from the back seat with his cellphone? Great idea, great scene, completely ridiculous ... or is it? Well, Sony wanted to see just how responsive the Exmor sensors and the Bravia Engine displays of the Xperia Arc smartphones. So, they used them to drive a car with no other means of seeing outside. The result is a rather wild video.
