AndroidGuys reports that all of them came from a single source, labelled as ReFraud, and were disguised as various popular but not overly obvious apps, like wallpapers and simple games.

[UPDATE] Android SMS Bug Now Has "Critical" Priority and [Rally with Us] to Fix The Android SMS Bug posts for full details. Seems now the bug's been parred down to a separate issue with receiving emails-to-SMS from Bank of America, SMS alerts sent by Linkedin, and SMS alerts sent by T-Mobile. Each of these appear to corrupt Android's SQLite database, making things go wild. All of this is detailed in a separate Issue in the Google Code reporting site, #1233.
rallied behind making the Android SMS Bug a thing of the past by dropping a gigantic amount of clicks on the 9392 SMS BUG thread in the Google Android code complaint department. In the time between then and now, the thread went from medium priority up to CRITICAL! This is totally rockin since this problem has been on the books since way back in June, 2010.
