Those of you out there surfing T-Mobile’s airwaves should know of upcoming changes your carrier will be putting into effect fairly soon. On April 5th, they plan on capping your domestic off-network data roaming usage. Limits are extremely low, so it will be important to keep an eye on data consumed while roaming.

When the limit is reached, users will not be able to access data services of any kind until they are reconnected to T-Mobile towers. Many smartphone users tend to purchase the 2GB data package, and this will land you 50MB of off-network usage after the change in April. The limit resets every billing cycle.

There a couple reasons why customers buy into “Unlimited” plans as soon as they become available: The first, for the comfort of knowing hidden fees won’t show up later. And second, knowing you’re going to have an unlimited amount of data – regardless of where you are in the USA. What do you T-Mobile customers have to say about this? Let us know in the comments below.

I debated even running this story for a while this morning but my love for Verizon 4G LTE speeds made me give in. According to a Verizon spokeswoman the 4G LTE network over on Big Red will NOT be compatible with other LTE networks. So Verizon phones will not work on AT&T’s soon to launch 4G LTE network, or vice-versa. This doesn’t really come as a surprise at all. I mean did anyone expect Verizon or AT&T to share? I sure didn’t.

The 4G LTE networks run on SIM cards similar to current GSM phones and GSM users have been able to swap SIM cards in different devices and carriers. The next-generation technology in both Verizon and AT&T 4G LTE are basically the same but apparently will run off completely different frequencies.

Like I said, this comes as no surprise even though they could make them work together but clearly that would not be a good business decision. AT&T does not have any 4G LTE phones out at the moment so we will still have to wait it out. I have two questions though, first being will AT&T or Verizon phones be able to roam on the others LTE network if needed? and second, I wonder if our android developer community could figure out a way to get them to work together. That would be full of #winning. We will report back if and when we hear more on this.

Earlier in the week I’m sure you all heard that AT&T will be buying T-Mobile US. This was huge news that shook the mobile phone and Android community. T-Mobile has been a huge supporter and partner with Google through the entire ride. Today we bring you some very good news if it holds to be true. According to TmoNews the newly announced G2x by LG will have both T-Mobile 3G/4G as well as also having AT&T 3G/4G. A quad-band 4G, future proof for the T-Mobile merger maybe?

So far nothing regarding this has been confirmed. This was just something our friends at TmoNews stumbled on and had to share. For more information about the amazing LG G2x check out our Hands-On here. According to a few stories that have went around lately, T-Mobile phones will not work on AT&T after the merge has been completed, but will work for the next 12-18 months. I have also seen reports that AT&T will be adding to T-Mobile’s towers to make them dual-band so their own phones, and our T-Mobile phones will all work and roam on both teams towers. That would be nice.

For now there is tons of unknown information. We are still waiting for any new info we can find regarding this. Things will be getting interesting over the next 12 months as all of this unfolds. I’ve also heard reports of the congress telling the FCC to take a serious look at the merge to make sure it abides by all the antitrust, and competition policies. So that could cause some issues. Either way stick with AndroidCommunity as it all unfolds as we will be here the entire way.

One of the few gripes people is having with the new EVO 4G is short battery life. While on 4G and medium to heavy usage, I’ve seen the 4G go from fully charged to almost dead in 4-5 hours. This is unacceptable for today Smartphone’s. It should last at least 8 hours or more if you’re not a heavy user.

1. Add widgets to your HTC Sense homescreen to control the radios (Bluetooth, WiFi, 4G)

2. Use the widgets to turn off select radios when not in use. If you’re not using 4G, switch it off and fall back on 3G instead to gain better battery life.

3. Turn off network roaming. By default, roaming is turned on for the HTC EVO 4G out of the box, which means that the phone scans for the strongest CDMA/EV-DO signal. If you’ve got great Sprint coverage where you are and don’t need to roam onto one of Sprint’s partner carriers, turn off roaming so the phone doesn’t need to constantly search for the best signal.

4. Turn on automatic brightness so the screen can adjust in light and dark environments rather than having brightness turned all the way up. Alternatively, you can also set the screen brightness lower by default.

5. Turn off live wallpapers–they’re pretty, but they do use a little bit of extra processing power.

6. Carry an extra battery or plug into a car charger when you can.

Give these settings a whirl and see if it improves your battery life. Post a comment on your experience with the EVO’s battery and the things you do to improve the battery life. These settings should work but in the mean time, keep you charger handy especially if you live in a 4G area.

The on again off again saga that is the Droid 2.1 update is on again, hopefully. Engadget has gotten their hands on an internal memo that that outlines the OTA update for the Droid. At noon today, which has come and gone, 1000 Droid users should receive the update and by midnight there should be 9000 more. And by Thursday, almost all Droid’s should receive the OTA. Judging by how this was handled so far, I wouldn’t get my hopes up too high. The full memo is after the break.

Just the other day we reported that a user was charged a ridiculous amount of money for data roaming when his data was turned off, even after being assured that he would be ok. It appears that this has caught T-Mobile’s attention and they have come fourth with an official response.

The option to turn off data should work fine, but that’s not always the case as any third party application can then override this basic phone feature whenever it chooses. This then brings us back to the initial problem of not being able to kill background processes on the T-Mobile G1.

From the horse’s mouth: “Some third-party applications available for download on Android Market require access to the internet and have the ability to turn on data roaming when in use. Customers are informed whether an application will use this feature prior to downloading, but should also be aware when traveling outside the country.”

Official T-Mobile statement:

T-Mobile is committed to delivering the best experience in wireless to our customers. If a T-Mobile customer would like to use their T-Mobile G1 while outside the country, they should contact Customer Care before they leave to ask that the WorldClass feature be added to their service at no additional charge. If they choose, customers can also disable data roaming on the G1. This can be done by going through the following steps: Home Screen > Menu > Settings > Wireless Controls > Mobile Networks > Data Roaming.

Some third party applications available for download on Android Market require access to the Internet and have the ability to turn on data roaming when in use. Customers are informed whether an application will use this feature prior to downloading, but should also be aware when traveling outside the country.

Just the other day we reported that one user was charged over $100 for taking his T-Mobile G1 out of the country even though customer service said it would be fine and turning all data on their phone off. Apparently this is only an issue with US versions of the T-mobile G1.

To ensure that customers to not rack up unexpected costs, roaming is by default disabled in all new UK models. If a user so wishes to enable it a warning message will pop informing users that there will be additional costs. You may be asking yourself, why in the world is it disabled for them and now us?

Just to note, when roaming is turned off it includes not just data roaming but all roaming. If you do not wish to incur data roaming charges you will not be able to use your phone. For those of you who travel overseas often, the T-Mobile G1 is about the worst phone for you to own. Unless you have money to burn we don’t suggest even taking the G1 with you.
