Opera’s webkit based browser launches in beta, we go hands-on

Earlier in the month we saw news from Opera about how they had reached the 300 million user mark. That news came along with details of an updated browser, one that is based on webkit. The folks at Opera had promised that they would be showing it off during Mobile World Congress and as of today -- they have released it for all to enjoy. The browser is available by way of the Google Play Store and is dubbed, Opera browser beta.

Opera Mini updates to version 7 with hardware acceleration

There are a lot of browser options out there for Android, but one from the "old guard" of desktop browser publishers is Opera Mini. This one's been around a while (longer than Android itself, in fact) but recent updates may merit another look from those who have passed over it before. Version 7, released just today,  includes a bevvy of new features such as an improved compression engine, hardware acceleration on certain devices, and support for Ice Cream Sandwich's Android Beam. You can download the updated browser for free in the Google Play Store.

Opera Mini Spreads to Verizon Feature Phones, Androids Scorn

Today Verizon has announced that a set of feature phone including LG enV2™, LG enV®3,  LG enV® TOUCH, Samsung Alias™ 2, Casio® G’zOne Ravine™ and Casio® G’zOne Rock™ will have Opera Mini available for web browsing starting immediately. This is an odd move for Verizon as feature phones aren't exactly at the hight of popularity right this very moment, but perhaps a push to slightly nicer apps like Opera Mini on these inexpensive handsets will encourage upgrades to the vastly engaging world of Android.

Opera has announced that Opera Mobile for Android will be released within a month, complete with hardware acceleration and pinch-to-zoom.  The company claims that the former "allows Opera Mobile to run at lightning speed" and that "navigating a page will be faster than ever, and the improvements to the UI will be momentous." Meanwhile, rather than the two-stage zooming in Opera Mobile currently, the new version for Android will support multiple levels of pinch-zooming.  "Text will now be rendered at a per character level" the company says, "and zooming in will be a fluid zoom from page-width down to the text you want to focus on."
