NOOKcolor Getting Update to Android 2.2 in January [Update]
0
For those out there who purchased the newest eReader from Barnes & Noble, the NOOKcolor offers up plenty of options out of the box, but for those who think outside of the box, the device has an almost unlimited potential. And that's all thanks to the Android platform ticking away under the hood. While we've already seen Android 2.2 hacked onto the device, it looks like Barnes & Noble is confident in their update strategy, to confirm that the eReader will be seeing the official update in just a matter of weeks.
NOOKcolor can now use Android Market (If you’re Rooted, that is)

Remember back at the tail end of November when those superstars over at XDA rooted the NOOKcolor? Remember how basic it was and all they really had on there was Angry Birds (what else do you need?) Well now there's something even BETTER - complete access to the Android Marketplace! Hooray! Get to downloading!

0NOOKcolor Android 2.2 Froyo hack revealed [Video]
2
Having been rooted at the tail end of November, the Barnes & Noble NOOKcolor is now getting Android 2.2 Froyo, though only unofficially. Several people have managed to get the updated OS onto the 7-inch touchscreen tablet, with jacememes sharing a video of it in action (that you can see below), but if it's instructions you're after then Jesse Vincent has the details.
Be warned, however, this isn't the simple matter of downloading a ROM and reflashing your ereader. Instead you'll have to compile the OS yourself, and then do potentially dangerous things like shut off the battery heat monitor that could potentially see your NOOKcolor cook itself. Meanwhile WiFi, Bluetooth and many other things will be missing. Still, we're guessing a public-ready release is already in the works by the usual suspects.

NOOK SDK v1 Available Now for Download

While the NOOKcolor (we spent a week with the device, [click here] to see how it went) has already been rooted, and owners can now install games like Angry Birds onto it, the news for developers that the first version of the NOOK Software Developer Kit is now available should be good indeed. It will provide developers with the tools necessary to take full advantage of the eReader, and unlock any doors that had been previously unaccessible.
NOOKcolor Receives Full Teardown

The fine folks over at ZDnet have decided to tear down completely the NOOKcolor, a device which we've had quite a bit of experience with (see full list of review and hands-on posts with NOOKcolor at the bottom of this post) They begin by noting the fun aspects of the box - ie the magnets, and get into the fun stuff when they begin by unscrewing the first two Torx T5 screws from underneath the microSD slot cover.
NOOKcolor Rooted!

Looks like those crazy cats over at XDA Forums are at it again, this time with everyone's favorite new color e-reader, NOOKcolor! And what did they do? They rooted it, of course, allowing the loading of, what else? Angry Birds! It seems to be the new anthem for "I GOT THIS WORKING!" There's great potential in this device, as we wrote earlier today in our final judgements on NOOKcolor over at A Week With NOOKcolor: 3rd Party Apps and Final Wrap-up. As XDA forum member IOMonster says, and I agree, "this thing has the potential to be an amazing device, we just gotta 'fix' it first."

Our sister site SlashGear has been spending this week doing hands-on segments with the NOOKcolor. Today, Chris went over the reading capabilities of the Android based table made by America's mot popular book store. One feature is the ability to highlight specific passages in novels and share it via Twitter, Facebook, or one of your contacts.

Bookstore Barnes and Noble release today their first big television advertisement for NOOKcolor, a device they're promoting as a device in which they've inserted what they say is "All [they] know about reading." It's all in there! Experience millions of books like never before (including video content inside recipes which, just so you know, wont be available until at least Q1 of next year. Relax with the magazines you love whenever and wherever, share with the ladies sitting next to you getting a perm, and read books to your kids (or have them read to them by the device!)
