What do we have here? This isn’t the first netbook we’ve seen running Android, but it is one of the most Interesting. Japanese manufacturer NEC has revealed the MGX, an Android-powered device in the “pocket translator” form factor popular across Asia. The device is in the early stages of development – you can see it’s running Android 1.5 or 1.6 in the photo below.

Details are pretty scarce on the prototype, which is understandable considering that the hardware is far from finished. NEC did say that the MGX uses a 7-inch OLED display panel with a standard 1024 x 600 resolution. The screen can fold back on itself, making the device a convertible tablet of sorts. NEC is claiming a 10-hour battery life. The dimensions are 8.5 inches long by 3.5 inches wide, and at a glance it looks like less than half an inch thick when the lid is closed.

The prototype is bound for a 2013 release in Japan, and considering NEC’s lack of presence in the US, probably won’t be landing stateside at all. Some may wonder what the point of such a device is when tablets and full-sized netbooks already exist, but this particular form factor is very popular with students and businesspeople in certain markets. The MGX may be the first indication of a shift towards Android on this range of devices. But NEC, bump that sucker up to Ice Cream Sandwich at the very least before 2013, OK?

Acer is reportedly readying some cool tablets running Sandy Bridge processors for the market and according to TechRadar; the phase out of netbooks is underway at Acer. The tablets will runs Android 3.0 most likely and have screens in the 7-inch and 10-inch range.

Acer’s Lu Bing-hsian has stated that he tablets will be faster than laptops with windows onboard and will run quad-core processors. At this point, there is no official time frame for the tablets to land.

The Eee Pad is expected to debut at CES starting next week and ahead of the expected debut we have some new pics of the thing to check out.

The photos show that the device has a USB 3.0 port, a chicklet keyboard under the display, and more. The expectation is that we are looking at more of a convertible netbook running Android than a tablet like the iPad or Galaxy Tab.

You can see the Android menu buttons if you stare long enough at the pics. This should be interesting, but I think most users are really leaning towards a pure tablet today rather than a netbook device.

In addition to the regular Android apps, Toshiba has loaded their own custom launcher, Opera Mini, Fring and Documents To Go, among others. Battery life is rated at up to 8hrs runtime – that’s with normal use, not leaving the AC100 whirring away to itself on a shelf somewhere – or a full week of standby.

Connectivity includes WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR as standard, as well as USB 2.0 and an SD card reader, while 3G/WWAN is optional. No word on pricing at this stage, but the Toshiba will debut in August 2010. For more on the AC100, check out our first impressions over at SlashGear.

Acer recently announced the D260 netbook. This netbook will have the ability to dual boot Windows 7 and Android. It will be released on July 1st, finally an Android netbook/tablet type device that we can actually go out and purchase.

Acer claims that you could dual boot this netbook from Windows to Android in 15 seconds. It has 8 hours of battery life and the option to have an Intel Atom N455 or Atom N450 processor at 1.66 GHz. It also has a 10.1 inch screen with an integrated webcam.

As expected there’s Wi-Fi b/g/n with Bluetooth 3.0+HS and 10/100 Ethernet. There are also three USB 2.0 ports, VGA, multi-format memory reader and audio in/out. If we’re lucky it could land on one of carriers because it also has quad band 3G/UMTS. The price has yet to be announced, it should be fairly reasonable.

Sorry for the picture below but it’s the best we have at the moment. For most, this is a welcome change from all the tablet and slate talk. Toshiba has an Android netbook in the works and it is powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra chipset. This is a 10-inch netbook that was originally going to ship with Windows 7 now it’s going to be preload with Android.

The Toshiba AC100-114 is a 10.1-inch netbook with an HDMI port and NVIDIA’s Tegra T20 GPU. It also has a 16GB SSD, SDHC card reader, Wi-Fi and 512 RAM. Just like in the mobile phone world, tablets are not for everyone, some folks prefer to have a physical keyboard.

This netbook measures in at 26.2 x 18.9 x 1.4-2.1 cm and weighs 0.9kg. It outfitted with a 2,200mAh 3-cell battery that is good for 4-5 hours. That’s a bit low for a portable device so keep your charger handy. This netbook is also capable of 1080p video, there is currently no price or release date set.

Not much is known about this tablet yet. it does have a 10 inch screen, a front facing camera and a Snapdragon-class Armada 610 processor that is capable of 1080p decoding and encoding. Also, this processor meets open GL ES 2.0 so 3D graphics should look pretty good. This tablet will ship with Android 2.1, hopefully 2.2 will make an appearance instead. We keep an eye out for more information about this tablet.

An old roadmap has recently surfaced on Android Central with a few Android devices we haven’t seen until now. The Sparta, Athens and looking Glass HD (codenames for now, don’t think these names will stick).

The Sparta is an 11-inch netbook, it has a 1024 x 768 TFT display, ARM processor, and optional connectivity modules for 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It appears as though the screen swivels also. This could make for a unique user experience. Next we have the Athens, a sub-0.9kg netbook. It has the same screen size as the Sparta an ARM processor and the same optional connectivity modules. Both of these devices may be released this fall.

The Looking Glass Pro is a 7 inch Android tablet with an “HD screen” and digital TV tuner. This device is similar to the Looking Glass tablet mentioned in an earlier leak, it just has a different screen. Dell has an awesome lineup coming soon.

It features a 10-inch screen, 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with Wi-Fi / 3G connectivity, 512MB of RAM, and 16GB of flash storage. The screen is a resistive touch screen but it doesn’t have multi-touch capabilities. It’s not yet known if this device will have market access but HP has a list of apps that will come preloaded. The AirLife is set to launch soon in Latin America and in parts of Europe, it has been spotted on their US site as well so it could be available here at some point. The official word from HP is expected soon.

The Mini 5 will indeed be compatible with the Android Market and there is a strong possibility for future Dell tablets to choose resistive screens over capacitive.

Unlike to the iPad’s target market, Choubey reckons the Mini 5 will appeal to “a more tech-savvy generation of people” who choose functionality over appearance. The cloud-based aspects of the device are still unknown but Dell’s head tablet executive Neeraj Choubey said:

“If I bought something from Amazon store on my tablet and I downloaded it, why should I have to choose my tablet over my netbook? When I was at Yahoo they always talked about your content, your way, when you want it, how you want it. It’s something that everyone in the mobile space has embraced. You shouldn’t have to make decisions based on where your content is.”

The Mini 5 is Android Market compliant and will run any app that meets Google’s developer guidelines. As far as resistive screens in future models go, Dell might use new transparent conductor resistive panels over capacitive technology that support multitouch finger-input and the use of a stylus.

Philips has developed its own custom UI for Android and slapped it onto this big screen TV. This is rumored to have built-in support DIVX / XVID and will come in either an 8, 16, 32 and 64 GB and should arrive sometime in the summer. Here’s a quick video demo.

This one comes in the form of Intel’s second Android based MID, based on the upcoming Atom-series Moorestown processors. This MID features a touchscreen, WiFi and 3G, along with the usual sensors – GPS, accelerometer, digital compass – and both front and rear facing cameras.

This device comes in an Android and a version of Moblin. They maanaged to get time with both version and made two hands on videos that are coming up. These are not finally production builds so there still is some work to do.

When they asked the Intel rep what sets this apart from their competition from NVIDIA or TI, the rep stated:

“Their stance is that Moorestown brings with it flexibility – greater flexibility to run various platforms, including those intended for ARM and x86 systems – and of course as well as Android and Moblin there’ll be MeeGo support when that OS arrives later in 2010. Moorestown will be capable of running in a low-power mode for regular smartphone duties, or in a high-power (comparable to a netbook-style devices) mode when you need some processing or multimedia grunt.”

These look like some amazing devices and hopefully they will hit the market soon.

There are a few nice ones releasing soon hopefully. First up is the new Archos 7 tablet. Here is a link to more specs on the Archos 7

Other than the larger display this is pretty similar to the previous Archos tablet. There is also a new web cam on the front of this tablet which should make for some exciting web video to your friends. Hopefully even video chatting will be possible.

Next up we have the MSI Android tablet. It has a 10-inch black bezel and will boost all of the functions of today’s netbooks. It also will pack in a Nvidia Tegra based processor and should retail around $500, this will blow away the iPad.

Asus was eyeing entering into the Android market with a netbook that would run the open source OS. PC World reports that the Android netbook appears to be stalled. Asus CEO Jerry Shen says that it sees no clear market for smartbooks either.

Asus executives say that Android smartbook was shifted to a low priority because the limited engineering resources of the company were better used elsewhere. Perhaps Asus is simply holding off for the Chrome OS.
