Some Logitech Revue retail units sold with bricked firmware

Google TV has taken a beating in the last few months, especially Logitech's flagship Revue set top box. To add insult to injury, GTV Source reports that a considerable number of users who recently bought the Revue found that it couldn't authenticate with Google's servers, making the device a curvy and expensive paperweight. Apparently the issue is only happening to newer Revue boxes, though that's hardly a comfort to those affected.

Logitech Revue owners petition for unlockable bootloader

Google TV has seen better days. After an exciting start, the HTPC platform has been largely ignored by mainstream consumers, and the two hardware launch partners remain the only makers of Google TV devices to date. Logitech's Google TV users remain a small but dedicated lot, and they're growing increasingly frustrated over a lack of support and late updates. In order to have full access to the Revue hardware, a group of owners have petitioned the company to unlock the boootloader, in order to easily and effectively create custom ROMs and other mods.

Logitech abandons Google TV after 100 million dollar loss

Ouch. No one could claim that Google TV's been a smashing success, but Logitech called a spade a spade at its Analyst and Investor Day. CEO Guerrino De Luca said that the company had lost over $100 million in operating profits between the Revue and the EMEA region. De Luca did not mention the total loss breakdown between the hardware and the region. Currently, the company has no immediate plans to create a replacement for the Revue, but left the possibility open for new hardware some time in the future. So what were the biggest made with Google TV? According to De Luca, the pricing is the biggest issue, with $300 being an unrealistic price point for large sales. (Ya think?) He went on to call the whole endeavor "a mistake of implementation of a gigantic nature," and the company does not intend to manufacture more Revue units after the current hardware is sold.
To make the long story short, we thought we had invented [sliced] bread and we just made them. [We made a commitment to] just build a lot because we expected everybody to line up for Christmas and buy these boxes [at] $300 [...] that was a big mistake.
The pricing issue seems obvious enough; after all, Apple TV isn't exactly a barn-burner either, and it's only $100. Roku only gained mainstream attention when its prices hit rock-bottom, and that product has a lot more focus that Google TV. Still, Google's got plenty of money and manpower to devote to Google TV if they wish, a fact attested to by the recent update to Honeycomb with Android apps in tow. With only one major manufacturer supporting it, the future of Google TV is looking pretty bleak - maybe a Nexus-style device (at a more appropriate price) could bring Google TV into sharper focus? Revue supplies to run out this quarter, no new model in the pipe
The Logitech Revue set top box was not a successful product. It was overpriced to start with and had little content to set it apart from the much cheaper competitors out there. That fact that the Revue failed so badly is no surprise looking back that the device was not popular with buyers. Logitech CEO Guerrino De Luca talked about the Revue at a recently analysts and investor day and was very blunt.

Logitech Revue hitting retail stores claiming 3.1 Honeycomb and Android Market [Update]
It appears Google might finally be ready with the long delayed Android 3.1 Honeycomb update for the Logitech Revue and other Google TV set-tops. We've seen a few Honeycomb leaks lately and after the Revue dropped to $99 many bought it with the hopes to get Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich one day soon. The Logitech Revue is now hitting retail stores again with an updated box. This time right front and center it says Android 3.1 Honeycomb and the Android Market -- I guess it's time I go buy one.

What Microsoft’s Xbox 360 TV announcement means to Google TV
Today Microsoft announced they've partnered with tons of media and entertainment leaders all across the world to bring a better experience to TV's and Xbox Live. After reading through all of the announcements and providers they have come to terms with I quickly found myself wondering how this will effect Google TV -- with and without Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich. If set-tops like the Revue weren't already facing an uphill fight, it just got even steeper.

Logitech Revue gets another Honeycomb leak, Apps now showing in Android Market
Well folks, it looks like we are now seeing a second leak of Android Honeycomb for the Logitech Revue. From watching the video leaked along with it you can clearly see things are moving along quite nicely and it appears much closer to release than the last. If this doesn't make you want to run out and buy one for $99 I don't know what will -- except for maybe Ice Cream Sandwich.

Unofficial Honeycomb OS available for Logitech Revue, assuming you are brave
The Logitech Revue Android set-top box has been around for a long time now. Recently the Revue price was cut to $99 to improve sales. I was excited about the thing when it was first announced with support for Hulu streaming and lots more. Once the Revue landed and I tried it out, I found it lacking and more than a little boring. I was disappointed for sure. Many have been waiting around for the next update to come to the Revue for the Android OS.

Logitech Revue Now Just $99
In a recent earnings call by Logitech they announced that the Revue wasn't selling so hot and it would be getting a steep price drop. Today that has finally happened and now you can get the highly functional device for only $99. It originally launched for $299 at places like Best Buy so this is a pretty huge discount.
