LG Optimus G Pro Hands-on: 5.5-inch HD powerhouse

LG is here in Barcelona for Mobile World Congress on full attack mode. They've announced the new LG Optimus G Pro, and a slew of L series smartphones. We managed to grab some hands-on time with their new Optimus G Pro, and this thing is quite a powerhouse smartphone. Go ahead and say it, it looks like the Galaxy Note II. However, this thing has tons of features to set it apart.

LG Optimus G Pro global release to begin in Q2

This isn't the first time we have heard from LG about the Optimus G Pro smartphone, however this time around we are getting a rough idea as to when we can expect the global roll-out to begin. In short, LG has announced that will begin during the second quarter of the year. Of course, those in Korea will get the handset quite a bit sooner. In fact, the Korean release is set for this coming Wednesday, February 20.

LG Optimus G Pro features a curved glass display

LG has officially revealed the design of the Korean variant of the Optimus G Pro. The 5.5-inch phablet will feature a curved glass display and from the looks of it, it will also feature a glittery back side similar to that of the Nexus 4. The curved glass display was added by LG to create what they call the "2.5D" effect. The device looks noticeably different from the Japanese variant of the phone, especially on the back casing. Other than the 5.5-inch Full HD display, and the increased 3,140 mAH battery, the Korean variant of the LG Optimus G Pro should have the same specs as the Japanese variant. The specs include a 1.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 32GB built-in storage, 2GB of RAM, a 13MP camera, 2.1MP front-facing camera, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. LG is speculated to have upped the screen size of the LG Optimus G Pro because they wanted the device to compete directly with the Samsung Galaxy Note II. By making a device similar to the Samsung Galaxy Note II, LG hopes to sway more consumers to buy their devices, considering how Samsung seems to be monopolizing the Android marketplace there. The device is also speculated to launch by the end of this month. The released date was rumored to be pushed up because LG feared that the announcement of the Samsung Galaxy S IV may dramatically hurt the sales of the LG Optimus G Pro. By releasing the device ahead of schedule, LG is hoping to get a head start on sales before the Samsung Galaxy S IV is able to dominate the marketplace. [timeline] [via Korean Newswire]

LG Optimus G Pro confirmed to have a 5.5-inch display

While carrying the same name as its Japanese counterpart, the South Korean version of the LG Optimus G2 has been confirmed to have a 5.5-inch Full HD display. It’s speculated that the reason LG decided to up the screen size on the South Korean version of the Optimus G Pro is because they wanted a device that can compete directly with the Samsung Galaxy Note II. With Samsung’s Android devices being the devices consumers opt for, LG wanted to bring a phone into the market that would sway more people into its direction. This information comes directly from LG, who confirmed the information through its Facebook as well as its social website. Right now they’ve only released a teaser of their device, but they promise to reveal more information in the days to come. While it’s great to know that the device will feature a 5.5-inch Full HD display, we would also love to know where these devices will be released. We’d like to know if this device will be available in multiple countries, or if it’d be only available in South Korea. We’d also like to know which variant of the LG Optimus G Pro we’ll see in the U.S.
