LG G Watch R

Wifi on LG G Watch R enabled via mod

We’ve talked about the fact that LG has not activated the wifi feature on the LG G Watch R when it pushed out the Android 5.1.1 update. The device clearly has wifi hardware in it, and is certified by the FCC to run wifi. Maybe it was a marketing decision to activate all features in the much more expensive LG Watch Urbane and hype that instead of the basic LG G Watch R wearable/smartwatch. That being the case does not however stop the good people at XDA to create their mods and try activating the feature. That day has arrived, ladies and gentlemen.

LG gives official statement on G Watch R ‘no wifi’ issue

It has been kind of a roller coaster ride, a soap opera if you will, regarding the “no wifi” issue on the LG G Watch R smartwatch. The owners of the undoubtedly nice LG G Watch R were expecting that with the Android 5.1.1 update to Android Wear promising WiFi connectivity, their smartwatches would actually gain that feature. Much to their surprise and disappointment, this did not happen. We now get a clearer picture with the official LG statement.

No WiFi support for some smartwatches from LG, Asus

Apparently, not all Android Wear smartwatches are created equal. While those who own the Moto 360 and the Sony Smartwatch 3 are rejoicing that they will have WiFi support from the latest update from the wearable platform, some smartwatches like the LG G Watch, G Watch R, and the Asus Zenwatch will not be getting this additional connectivity from Android. There is still no word from Samsung on whether their devices have WiFi antennas.

Picture of supposed new Moto 360 smartwatch leaked on Weibo

While there are a growing number of players in the smartwatch market, one of the earliest OEMs to have made their mark in the market is Motorola and its Moto 360. Supposedly, it was the first round-faced Android Wear device to come out, but LG G Watch R beat them to the punch in terms of launching. And while the Moto 360 received stellar reviews, it just went quiet all of a sudden. However, a new image leaked on China's social networking giant might see the revival of the smartwatch.

LG releases product announcement video for Watch Urbane

When LG released its G Watch last year, people were genuinely excited and interested how the OEM will create their first wearable for the Android Wear platform. However, the hype was better than the product, and the G Watch became an example of how not to make a smartwatch. They were able to improve things considerably with the LG G Watch R, but it looks like they're bringing it up another notch with the upcoming LG Watch Urbane.

Android Wear 5.0.2 ready for download on your smartwatch

Before you thinking of getting a new smartwatch yet again, update your wearable to Android Wear 5.0.2 first. Google has recently rolled out the Android Wear 5.0.2 software update but only for some Android Wear devices like the LG G Watch R, Motorola Moto 360, and Samsung Gear Live. These are some of the bestsellers in the wearable market today but they could soon be rivalled by the latest models we've seen the past few weeks like the gorgeous LG Watch Urban.
